When people say their babies are never alone when awake, they're forgetting the time the baby is falling asleep/has just woken up/is alone for a minute while you go to the loo/get the door/stir a pan.

I'm not forgetting that time. I honestly did go to the loo with my baby in a sling.

A baby I love dearly was in a terrible accident last year. It made me look long and hard at risks, what they mean and which ones are acceptable to me. We have to balance risk and benefit. You think there are mystical benefits to this material. I don't. Therefore there is no benefit therefore the risk is unacceptable. For you the equation is different.

I get what you're saying and where you're coming from. x

On a separate note... I see homeopathy and acupuncture being discussed. I don't think either of these are the basis for amber teething necklaces. However, while I don't believe alternative medicine or therapies can cure cancer, I do think they can induce a positive effect - easing the pain, etc. There was a recent study that proved placebos are effective even when the patient is aware that they have been given a placebo so even if there is no medical value then alternative treatments are still worthwhile. It is possible that babies/young kids associate the necklace with mom telling them that they feel better and thus they actually *do* feel better. It's no less believable than the "magic" kiss that mom gives when you bump your knee and that *always* makes kids feel better! ;)

Well, my ds wears his amber chain round his ankle under his socks or sleep suit. It is, like sammy girl says, knotted at each little bead and I can always tell when my oh has left it off ds due to the appearance of symptoms such as dribbling/red cheeks. Within a few hours of chain being put back on the symptoms disappear.

I believe it works and we have four teeth with very little disturbance to ds normal behaviour and plenty of folk have commented on the lack of "usual" teething symptoms.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I think that those who have used an amber bracelet/anklet will know why those who use one will defend our actions.

  • This will be my only post. I am a mum of 3 children ranging from 13 years to 8 months and I use an amber teething necklace on my baby. He is completely different when wearing it, so.much so that its only removed for cleaning now. I have also used alternative medicines on the past, with my 13 year old, chamomile crystals for colic. Both of these alternatives have worked for my chikdren. I intend to purchase a necklace for myself and an ankket for my 13 year old too as we suffer from migrain and it has been shown to help with the symptoms. I do NOT put my children at risk but merely do what I feel necessary to alleviate their pain. Neither do I think its ok for people to be slated and insulted for doing what they see is the best for their children! To those that think its ok to do so, grow up, get some manners n keep your nasty opinions to yourselves, I was always taught if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all!!

Assuming there was actual chamomile in whatever you used, that's a herbal remedy (which can work) not a homeopathic one (which can't).

I have an amber anklet for my son and since wearing it at night round his ankle, he's got back into his routine before his pesky teeth. Before the anklet he was screaming in pain at night and it was heartbreaking. A few friends recommended this amber anklet and yes I was very dubious, but it has made a hell of a difference.

And for the person who said homeopathy doesnt work, I disagree. Erm, all though my case study is a dog;) I have an 8 year old dog who has had chronic skin ailments since a pup. He has seen leading vets in the country, been on every medication going, had all the tests and he is allergic to meat, wheat and dairy, carpet and grass. I started feeding him a fully vegan after these tests. After researching homeopathic remedies I immediately stopped all his medication, shampoo, injections and switched over. I continued with his vegan diet and starting making my own shampoo for him and putting homeopathic oils in his food. No steroids, no piriton.

Two years on and he is a different dog. No more scratching till he bleeds, his hair is growing back and no more pointless vet bills for a new wonderdrug. It hasnt cured him and never will, but I think homeopathy has helped my old man.

. People have different views deal with it - thats life.
I have no problems with people having different views. However, in all conscience I cannot stay quiet if I think somebody is doing something that could bring serious harm to their baby.

Could be Chamomilla - the homeopathic remedy - only mentioned in case anyone doesn't realise you can get homeopathic camomile! If so, it would contain the same amount of "active ingredient" as any other homeopathic remedy of equal strength. Camomile, the herb, is used in many alternative treatments from tea to homeopathy.

Btw, I've googled for the recent placebo study if anyone is interested. It was this one: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0015591
  • Funny that... Cos I don't remember saying homeopathic??? Alternative yes!! There was chamomile in them too, the crystals were made up especially by a well known famous pharmacist who used to offer help on the radio, he believes these things can help, even with all his medical knowledge!!

. Or are you one of these people that would like to see your child constantly "doped" up on calpol to get some peace and quiet. Sometimes in life people have different views on how to bring up their children and that is their business and is definatley not for people to judge.

My son has had less than 1/3rd of a bottle of calpol and less than 1/4 of a bottle of ibuprofen in his 19 months on the planet.
    .
As for the PP who mentioned would we give our children acid if they said it was safe - What blooming land do you live in?

You already give all manner of 'acid' to your child. Citric acid, malic acid and tartaric acid to name but 3.

Glad it works for you ;) Just to point out, the majority of people on this thread who DISAGREE that these necklaces etc can ACTUALLY have any REAL effect on pain have been polite, to the point and extremely factual in their answers. I believe there to have been one or two comments that were maybe a tad unnecessary in their mocking tone and i agree that was uncalled for.

I do believe that the people who seem to have been more aggressive with their responses have in fact been the people who are "pro-amber" ..... I imagine that this is possibly linked to the fact that it is a very emotive issue - parenting and peoples choices regarding it that is. Naturally people do not like to feel criticised and will become very defensive - especially when it comes to their children!

Perhaps this thread needs to just come to a natural end - one where those who choose to use Amber for their babies should continue to do so (albeit safely) as they believe it works in some capacity. Those who believe that there is no way that it can possibly work (like me) can just accept that there are those who will continue to believe/agree with the "Hype" (i work in a childrens centre and have done for 5years - meet hundreds of new mums each month.... these are DEFINITELY the new "in thing") and we can just not use them ourselves.

    Good Plan? :A
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?
