  • The frozen Petit Fours, frozen Salmon Fillets (packs of two) and the Serrano Ham at Aldi are superb. Their dishwasher tablets superior value to anything else on the market.

Aldi's Passatta in tetrapack bricks is superb and so their olive oil.

Lidl has some decent red wine and once a year during their French themed week they sell frozen "Flammkuche" which you can't otherwise get in the UK. Brilliant!

Not worried about animal welfare then?

As long as it's cheap eh???

I dont eat meat at all but my family do. I am under no illusions as to the killing methods used in Halal and non Halal meat and neither is preferable to me. I have been told a lot of the meat eaten in the UK is Halal but just not labelled as being so. I do only buy British/Irish meat because of the standards animals are kept in

My family eat meat, know an animal was killed to enable them to do so but still want to eat it, its their choice.

My ideal would be to buy only meat produced on a non commercial basis from small holdings etc but this is not feasible. i do however buy eggs and the occasional chicken or some meat from someone who has a small holding however this is not always available.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Branigans Red Onion Chutney.

Discovered this in Aldi a fortnight ago. Can't get enough of the stuff. Goes with everything.

I like it so much, OH is making a cheese and red onion chutney tartlet for Cmas Day starters!

I always go for red tractor, or alternatively a good farmshop or butcher that can source from animal to plate.

With you on the latter. Not so sure about the Red Tractor scheme, though, given that all it means is that the meat's British - the standards required are the bare minimum for factory farming.

Lidl do a whole British chicken with garlic and herbs - at £3.99 it is a bargain, dee-lish! takes about 2 hours to cook, bought another one tonight, I buy these regularly - give it a try :)

It is a bit more than that actually http://www.redtractor.org.uk/about-us that is very simplified, but it is a programme for higher welfare which can only be a good thing and we should all demand at least red tractor as a minimum.

When you consider halal slaughter and that a lot of value chicken, for example, comes from China where their welfare can be well below the 'minimum standard for factory farming ' that you quote, this is my minimum.
