I hope it's ok to post links here. I thought this article may be of interest which compares Aldi products against equivalent branded products: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2508069/Aldi-successful-copies-brands-improves-quality.html0

Ive tried the st etienne lager, personally I think it tastes very much like stella and Id buy it before I bought a can of stella as its cheaper.
Not surprised that aldi did well in the ratings there, Ive always been impressed with aldi products.0 -

Completely agree but it's a shame that there are so many 'treats' compared rather than everyday essentials or healthier things.
Ironically, the Aldi that opened in Winchester (referred to in article) is right next door to Waitrose whereas Sainsbury's and Tesco are on the other side of town and Morrisons and Asda are miles away. I think loads of people do what most of us do and buy all they can in Aldi then go to SM for top ups. I'd love to see the before and after sales figures for that Waitrose.0 -

Did you know Aldi & Lidl are brothers & they came to blows one day so opened up two competative supermarkets.!!!
Er no, it's Aldi North and Aldi South which are owned by brothers who fell out.. Aldi South is owned by Karl Albrecht and Aldi North by Berthold Albrecht and now Theo Albrecht Jr.
Aldi Nord owns Trader Joe's in the USA and Aldi in UK is part of Aldi South.
Aldi is trialling a Has No gluten free range.. anyone seen it ?

Trying to save on my £100 weekly Tesco shop.
I was thinking of giving Aldi a shot, but would love some advice on what was good etc.
Thank You0 -
Loads of threads on this exact subject, try looking through the what's good at Aldi / Lidl thread if you don't want to search the board.
ETA: £100 pw on food is a lot IMO, but of course dependent on your circumstances. The OS board has plenty of ideas for getting more out of your food budget.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

My weekly budget for two people eating organic/wild, additive and gluten free and including toiletries, cleaning stuff and foil etc is £100pw.
So I'd say Aldi or Lidl should save you loads of money !0 -
Best advice I can give you is to start small. Try one or two items, if you don't like them then don't buy them again. As one of the other posters said, it really depends on what you buy. I wouldn't try to buy my whole shop there either. Don't be put off by the sparse element to the shop or the speed of the till checkout operators. I actually like that (in and out quicker) , less choice and the operators don't really want to know what the weather is like anyway!
I started with the viewpoint of "what exactly could they do bad to..."
Good example is dishwasher tablets-they are fine and cost £2.69 for 50 (I think) compared to what £5 for finish etc in asda/sainsbury etc
Sweetners- they sell stevia which I think is slightly healthier (not going to give me cancer quite as quickly!)
Kids love the choceur brand of chocloate. Hate the dairyfine.
Even on a small scale I am probably saving £30 a week off a similar budget to yourself from last May.0 -

This is the good and bad buys thread which might help, the later posts are more up to date. I'm sure you'll be able to save money even if you only buy a few things.0
