oh and Aldi, your rich fruit cake got marzipanned and iced (with your Dr Oetker marzipan and fondant icing), and was successfully passed off by me as 'homemade Christmas cake'! have done this for years, and the kids all rave
    about 'mums Christmas cake'!
the chocolate orange cheesecake disappeared in a flash! gorgeous!
I am rather partial to the cherry brandy dark chocolates, and so were my guests!
but - you didn't send enough large pork joints to our local store and they were sold out! had to go to Tresco for that!

Hate to criticise Aldi but my bag of sprouts wasn't good . Half went in the bin as they were slimy. :(

Still for 39p, they were still good value.

Are the Christmas cakes and other goodies reduced as yet? Can't remember if I bought from Lidl or Aldi last year, but the "bar" Christmas cakes were delicious, esp when pimped with a tot or three of whisky.

Actually, EV olive oil is one of the best non-animal fats for cooking due the chemical changes.

Lidl's Primadonna EV Olive Oil is good. Sainsbury's / Tesco do an Organic EV Olive Oil which is good value (Sainsburys do an unfiltered version too). The refined vegetable oils give me heartburn.

or sunflower oil - I like the Aldi one as you really cant taste the oil. I don't understand why people use Olive oil for ordinary frying. its expensive and really doesn't give better results than sunflower or vegetable oil.

We bought some French Sparkling Juices a few weeks ago at Aldi (must have been a special). The girls had them with Christmas dinner, nice stuff. Just natural ingredients and sugar, no artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives. I don't usually buy fizzy drinks for them but for special occasions this is good.

These are year round - was toying with buying some this summer for an occasion, but didn't in the end. Reason: they didn't look too expensive until I compared with standard bottles of lemonade and tonic water! I liked the glass bottles, though.

Has anyone been in today, and are there any particular bargains (in either?).

Aldi had most if its Chrimbo treats at 1/2 price, eg:
    - Christmas cake bars: 85p
    - Christmas cake round, ?8": £1.49
    - Brandy snaps: 49p
    - Stollen: 75p
    - Bog standard mince pies: 39p

I didn't think to look for cheeseboards, very remiss of me :o

Must vary from store to store. Nothing at all reduced in ours.
