Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

Good point - I've had some excellent fruit recently. The Super 6 Nectarines are/were fantastic. Also the Blueberries are consistently good. Apples are good, if generally expensive at the moment. I assume this is seasonal?
The Super 6 Sugarsnap Peas were nice, too.0 -
Recently I've been disappointed by the shelflife of various products in my nearest Aldi. Today, most of the decent quality bread and rolls had just a couple of days left on them (Kingsmnill - ie very much not decent bread - had its customary 6 weeks or so) and much of the meat was similarly dated.
Is this a local phenomenon or have others found the same?0 -
Link to this week's Super 6 fruit and veg at Aldi- https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/product-range/fresh-bakery/this-weeks-latest-super-6-fruit-veg-offers/
This week it's 2 x Little Gem Lettuce for 39p and the rest 49p: 4/5 pack peaches, Galia Melon, 500g large vine tomatoes, 250g runner beans, 320g apricots.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... Can't comment on bread products as rarely buy it. Suffice to say I'm sure your comment about Kingsmill having a six week shelf life is a little exaggerated
As for meat products, I picked up quite a few packs today which were dated well into the first week of August and beyond. Shortest dated product I bought was use by 02/08 but that's fine as I intend to use it tomorrow. A couple packs of steak are dated 11/08.
Cant say I've ever had a problem with short dated stuff in any of the stores I use, unless it happens to be an extremely popular product whereby I'm literally grabbing the last pack from the shelf!0 -

I very much recognise this situation. Two stores here; one's fine, but the other one (the nearer of the two for us) sells most of its fresh products with quite short dates. The milk at one store is usually about 10 days, but 6 days at the other, for example, and frequently just a couple of days on things like ham.
I've taken it up with Aldi HO but it makes no difference. They make all the right noises, but nothing changes. I assume it's just poor store management, and that they don't care enough to bother about complaints.0 -
Thanks for confirming it isn't just in my local store. It crossed my mind to take it up with the manager, who happened to be nearby helping load shelves, but you know how sometimes you just think 'what is the point?'...0

Our local Aldi is quiet-ish in the evenings so I had a quick chat with one of the girls on the floor about use by dates.
Apparently sometimes stock does get mis-rotated in the stock-room, as there is a massive and constant turnover of stock, and at that point it will sometimes go on the shelves with short use by dates.
She did say that it tended to be the younger and newer members of staff who made this kind of error.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... Box of 8 'Real Fruit Splits' for 89p
They are quite tasty and remind me of a Strawberry Mivvi of my yoof0 -
Pineapples in LIDL...medium size.....49p. Lowest I've seen.0

Has anyone noticed the shrinking washer powder and liquids in Aldi? Pack says 'New Size' with 25 washes on the liquid, price is the same though. They only did this last year as well but they did reduce the prices a little to compensate.0
