If you haven't eaten Basa (Pangasius) before, you might want to be a little wary of it. It's been associated with severe, sometimes near-fatal, allergic reactions - and I know that from personal experience because my wife was one of those who nearly died after being served it instead of the haddock that she ordered in a fish and chip restaurant in London.

that could be said about anything though! I understand it must have been a mighty scary situation for your family but 'warning' people about it isn't really going to help, the same could be said about shellfish, nuts, and loads of other stuff. Your partner was mis-sold it and unaware what she was eating, whereas people buying it in aldi are aware of what they are buying. Do you try a tiny bit of every food you buy before using it in a meal just in case you have a reaction?

I understand the point you're making, but Basa/Pangasius has quite a reputation for severe allergic reactions and it's as well for people to be aware of that. Check it out online.

Aldi Frozen Basa Fillets - 4 fillets for £1.49.
I love these. I have cooked them with a flour dusting in the frying pan and they are delish - tonight I baked them in parchment with butter, salt, pepper and a little lemon juice and thyme. gorgeous! for less than 50p a serving!

Love the Basa too (except the huge amount of ice its frozen in, needs a good long fridge defrost and drying before use). Chucked in the oven wrapped in foil with some pesto and chopped red pepper and chunky tomato, chopped garlic, salt, pepper and Oregano. Comes out already to plonk on some pasta, a sprinkle of Parmesan... mmmm!

Never had a bone or skin or any bit that needs trimming so very child friendly fillets, mine also like it dusted in flour (I often mix some cajun spice and paprika in the flour) and pan fried in a drizzle of olive oil.
European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.

I don't bother defrosting the Basa- I find a good rinse under the cold tap gets rid of the surface ice and the flour dusting sticks nicely. then cook and it doesn't shrink so much as if you defrost it. same with the bake in parchment method - I used frozen fillets and gave them an extra ten minutes and they were gorgeous - and didn't shrink at all.

I haven't been to Aldi for a month now. Does anyone know if the packs of passata are back in?
