Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

The important words are "not typically". This means that the presence of hock burns does not mean that the chicken wasnt free range.
Aldi chickens look like free range (here, Scotland) as the skin is more yellow rather than white which is a breed that is not grown in conventional barns as they grow slower.
Free range sadly only means that they "can" go outside if they find the pophole...
I agree with dlusmans but it's always worth investigating.First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0 -
Although a farmer friend of mine won't eat the skins under any circumstances - says he knows what's been used to grow and store them.
I only eat the skins of my home grown and organic potatoes.First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0 -
I agree. It's like the magic word 'organic'.
Organic is actually highly regulated

but that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of junk sold that is made from organic ingredients.

Lidl "Deluxe" New York Style vanilla cheesecake ........ OMG !!!
It is the best "bought" vanilla cheesecake I've had so far ( and I have eaten a few in my time) .

It's not especially cheap at £2-99 iirc but TBH I would have this AND pay the extra before the "cheapie" Aldi one at £1-79 any time.:cool:0 -
Loving the fairly new 'high protein' bread rolls in Lidl. They are brown wholemeal style triangle shaped and packed with seeds inside and toasted sesame outside.
I believe they are a fair few more calories than regular bread but they are very satisfying and delicious for an adult packed lunch. I find I want less accompanying snacks and far less likely to snack later on so the daily net calories definitely work out lower for me. Its said you should eat protein to lose weight because it takes longer to digest and slows your hunger down. The seeds in it are good for you too and aroma is lovely.
Lidl High Protein Rolls typically 100 - 115g per roll.
Ingredients:
Water, Linseeds, Wheat Protein, Soya Flour, Whole Wheat Flour, Sesame, Soybean Meal, Sunflower Seeds, Wheat Bran, Oat Fiber, Yeast, Salt, Colouring Spice Extracts (Curcuma).

Energy 1194kJ/268kcal
Fat 13.4g (Of which saturates 0.4g)
Carbohydrate 8.5g (Of which sugars 0.5g)
Fibre 12.4g
Protein 26.7g
Salt 0.99gEuropean for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0 -
Organic eggs at Aldi £1.49 for 6, and are as large as the £2.70 Waitrose packs. But only large Aldi branches seem to stock them.
Pity that a lot of Aldi stores are located at the centre of congested traffic zones, it's a major reason why I go rarely.
If I were Aldi I'd buy the entire Iceland chain and put an Aldi in each.0 -
Aldi Foodie Market Artisan Crispbreads £1.29 for 6.
Expensive but delicious - I tried the Chia & Oatmeal. You can make them go further by breaking them into smaller pieces.
They are chunkier, thicker and more substantial than Ryvita Thins, but similar in concept.0 -
