Can we get back to the subject of Aldi and Lidl than the boring veggie posts?

Got some of the Chocolate Coated Strawberries yesterday from Lidl. Blimey they are deeelish! A sort of a freeze-dried(?) strawberry in thick milk chocolate. Bit pricy at £2.49 for 100g, (in the current DeLuxe promotion) but lovely for a treat! :)

Aldi Specially Selected Batch Loaf - very nice.

But weirdly mine says Multiseed White loaf, when it's quite clearly brown. (Maybe it has the wrong label?)

Still brown and still nice... Maybe it's a trick since ds has bought and eaten this instead of the usual baby food white sliced bread.
  • A few years ago I would have never thought I would be doing nearly 90% of our weekly shop at a discount supermarket but I have converted and I love Aldi.

I mainly shop at Aldi, but when I do go to Lidl I can't resist a Chocolate twist from their bakery, but I find their fruit and veg selection is not as good as Aldi.

    My Aldi favourites are;
    - Brioche Buns and Rolls, these are great for making a restaurant style burger at home.
    - Bon Appetit French Chocolate Marble Brioche. TRY this it's amazing.
    - Diplomat Green Tea & Summer Berry Tea. This tea beat one from Harrods in a taste test.
    - Grandessa Strawberry Conserve.
    - Kallo Quinao & seeds rice cakes.
    - Harvest Moon Benefit Cereal Bars - Only around 60 calories per bar.
    - Snackrite Multigrain bites - Sour cream & Sweet Chili. A copy of Walkers Sunbites, they taste good and are low cal.
    - Snackrite Mini Cheese Bakes. - Mini chedders dupe.
    - Aldi Specially Selected Curry Sauces, Tikka, Doplaza etc
    - All Fresh Meat, especially their low fat mince, steak, beef burgers, chicken, lamb, beef, pulled pork, ribs, etc. - All at good prices and never had a bad quality one.
    - Fruit, Banannas, apples, blueberries, raspberries, plums, pineapple chunks, melon pieces, blueberries, pears, oranges.
    - Pack of 3 mixed peppers, onions, sweet potato, chantenay carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, jersey royal new potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce.
    -Moser Roth chocolate.
    - All cheeses
    - Tins of chopped tomatoes, Kidney beans, sweet corn.
    - Deli meats including wafer thin ham, corned beef, beef slices.
    - Rye Crisp bread - Their own version of Ryvitas.
    - Eggs, and other baking ingredients such as flour, sugar, dried fruits, food colouring.
    - Part bake rolls and bread.
    - Activ Raspberry Fruit Layer yogurt.
    - Perfect Puds Lemon Cheesecake
    - Aldi Vita Cat Gourmet Supreme.
    - Aldi Vita Cat Cheese & Chicken treats
    - Aldi Vita Cat Cat litter
    - Aldi Baby Shampoo
    - Lacura Cotton Pads. - Great for makeup and nail polish removal, great quality like the ones in Boots but half the price.
    - Lacura Hand Cream - Love this stuff and it's only 75p!?!
    - Power Force Anti Bacterial Wipes.

There's more but this is all I can think of for now, as you can tell I don't really buy frozen food from Aldi as I prefer fresh and we usually stop at Farm Foods for some branded frozen goods as well as Asda for everything else we can't get at Aldi.

Come on Aldi, get rid of your artificial chemical aftertaste in your flavoured yoghurt (many of my friends find the same), make more flavours and then I will buy it

Our Aldi (Norton, Stoke) has reopened after 4 days closure due to an extension being built (the actual process started back in September, it seems to have taken ages (a Mcdonalds next door started being built at same time and was complete by December)).

The aisles are now much wider and the store brighter. There are around 9 tills now (originally it had 4) but no self service or basket tills sadly which I hoped for.

Rather than an extended product range which they originally reported, it seems they made the aisles less claustrophbic and spread the items out, so the first aisle on the right is now made up of just cereal and cereal bars etc.

Still glad it is back open and we have £5 off vouchers for the next 5 weeks. It was noticeably busy at 9pm tonight which was a first.

That's good news. Aldi stopped stocking Thai fishcakes around Christmas and we've missed them. Must give Lidl a try.

Aldi Frozen Basa Fillets - 4 fillets for £1.49.
I love these. I have cooked them with a flour dusting in the frying pan and they are delish - tonight I baked them in parchment with butter, salt, pepper and a little lemon juice and thyme. gorgeous! for less than 50p a serving!

If you haven't eaten Basa (Pangasius) before, you might want to be a little wary of it. It's been associated with severe, sometimes near-fatal, allergic reactions - and I know that from personal experience because my wife was one of those who nearly died after being served it instead of the haddock that she ordered in a fish and chip restaurant in London.
