Did my first big shop in a few weeks in Aldi today and noticed price increases on quite a few items but mainly stuff that was reduced to silly prices i.e 1kg bag of chips to 79p and have now risen by 6p or so.

Yes maybe but those chips were £1 or more less than 12 months ago so still cheaper.

Every other supermarket I know has raised prices over that period unless it was on 'a special offer'.

Indeed, they were £1 a bag this time last year. They just seemed to have levelled out some pricing, I presume they went a little but too cut throat when they went reducing tons of prices.

I'll have a look at the savoury frozen pastries on offer in Greek week at Lidl's. I didn't buy them last year as they all STILL contained hydrogenated fats. Hoping for an ingredient overhaul!

A worrying situation for anyone (like us) who buys Aldi free range chickens in the belief that they're free range:

Aldi has apologised after a customer posted a picture of a free-range chicken with hock burn on social media.

Nicola Cooper took to Twitter after finding the damaged bird on the shelves of Aldi’s Carterton store. Hock burn indicates a bird has been sitting in waste, and is not typically found on free-range birds.

Aldi offered no explanation when Cooper initially complained by email, but following her tweet and subsequent social media storm contacted Cooper to offer its “sincere apologies” and vowed to launch an investigation.

An Aldi spokesman added this was an “isolated issue”, which had been raised with the supplier.

To be frank, I treat all but a very few 'free range' descriptions as little more than marketing scams - and I doubt Aldi is any worse than the rest.

The conditions under which chickens can be kept and still be allowed to be described as 'free range' would shock a lot of people.

I agree. It's like the magic word 'organic'.

The same people that find taking a life to satisfy their tastebuds perfectly reasonable?

I hate the hypocrisy peddled out by sanctimonious meat eaters. If you're going to eat meat, get on with it without pretending to be concerned for animal welfare.

Frankly, if you can't understand the difference there's really no arguing with you.

Getting back on topic, as someone posted on here a month or so back, there is only a handful of major suppliers in the UK, so I doubt if Aldi is affected that the other supermarkets won't be.

The important words are "not typically". This means that the presence of hock burns does not mean that the chicken wasnt free range.
