I've always loved McVities digestives but since trying the Lidl ones at 30p I much prefer them.

Have to disagree with you there.

Nearly all choc digestive copies, including Lidl's and Aldi's are nothing like McVities ones because it's not a proper digestive biscuit. They're yucky sweetmeal biscuits half-covered in choc. And sweetmeal is cheap and rubbish.

Oddly, the Sains Basics and Tesco Value choc biscuits don't use sweetmeal and are both much nicer and more digestive-like because of it.

Another option is trying own brands from most supermarkets.

If you set the score to 9+ which will give you everything from 9 to 10 to start with and only set it lower if 9+ has nothing in the results

    http://www.supermarketownbrandguide.co.uk/search.php?table=all

You can select dietary requirements, if any, and then choose the shops which are convenient for you, include taste notes then enter the search item.

Mostly, the comments are accurate and choosing 9+ items will return edible ones

    Brilliant website - thank you:beer:

Funny you should say that, because if you look at the ingredients of the Aldi chocolate digestives, you'll find that they're almost identical to McVities. And both show '45% wheat and wholemeal'.

And sweetmeal is just sweetened wholemeal - which is what all digestive biscuits are made from.

Another vote here for Aldi plain chocolate digestives. Their sirloin steak is also excellent, but you have to sometimes trawl through to find one that 'looks' nice. The frozen duck legs(orange, sweet chili or hoisin sauce) are very good as well.

Tried the nut cutlets, they were also fine, preferred the veg burgers, but that's just my own personal preference, I will definitely get them again.

Hi there, I meant the plain digestives, not the chocolate ones. :)

Really? I didn't know that, thanks!

Can anyone explain, then, how come none of the choc digestive copies taste anywhere as nice as McVities??

It's definitely the biscuit, I'm willing to take a hit on the chocolate.

Maybe they always sweeten them a bit too much or something.

Anyways, as I said the Sains Basics and Tesco Everyday ones don't taste that sweet and I found them more like the McVities ones than any others I've tried - and, of course, they were very cheap which is obviously a bonus.

    Whoops, my mistake, apologies!

I'm off to Lidl right now and will add them to my list.

    Thanks for the heads up!!
  • We tried the dauphinois potatoes in lidls French offer last week and really didn't like it, they had a strange after taste, so not a shortcut tea I'll be buying again!
