  • Is it just me or has the Aldi beef mince gone worse since they changed the packaging? I always buy the regular one, 500 gr. It used to cost 2 and now its a bit cheaper, but they changed suppliers. I just had it in bolognese sauce and its hard and just not that nice. I didnt have any problems with the old one, anyone else or have I just become pickier?

A colleague bought some chantaney carrots from Aldi. The following day, they were mushy.

I think it's the variety, not the shops fault, as Morrisons and Tescos go mushy very quickly.

I've tried freezing them but they go very mushy when defrosted.

I'm now into my 22nd year of shopping at Aldi and, in all that time, I have found very little to complain about quality-wise. What I don't like, however, is the way certain products that I buy regularly just disappear from the shelves for weeks on end, before re-appearing again. Early in the year it was the bags of prunes, which eventually re-appeared about 30p more expensive! Recently the Mint flavoured Lamb Burgers that DH is partial to have been missing from the freezers, along with bags of frozen haddock and the packets of frozen salmon. (The pink salmon is still available but we don't eat that) When we query the lack of these items the staff don't seem to know if or even when they will be back in stock. So we patiently wait .....!

The products I like sadly tend not to re-appear when they are gone (Lidl). Pretzels were the latest from the fresh bakery, before it was the olives in oil, frozen mini eclaires and profiteroles and I'm still waiting for the frozen green beens to come back...

Sadly, this seems to be the same wherever you shop. Decisions are made by head office and the foot soldiers in the stores haven't a clue why. Aldi is particularly frustrating in this respect but just this week Morrisons did it to me with a brand of crackers that I buy and Tesco (when I used to shop there) was notorious for it.

I have shopped in Aldi and Lidl for many years but now both are within walking distance of me I use both most regularly, although I have little loyalty unless the price and quality are right. At present I am in green smoothie mode so need a good quantity of veg and fruit and I have been into Aldi to get a supply. For the first time ever I did a My Supermarket comparison and Tesco would have been almost twice the price of Aldi. The other supermarkets were at least 50% more, and I hadn't appreciated just how much shopping at the discounters saves me. Everywhere else seems to have an obsession with all objects priced at a £1 - as though they are doing us a favour!

I agree we used to love these as an "Emergency standyby meal" when there was no time to cook from scratch. http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/Shopping/FindProducts.aspx?Query=breaded%20chicken
Disappeared for months now my DM tells me they are back:j The sesame crackers disappeared too which was a really trajedy as they are amazing. Luckily they came back too. It's confusing as nothing about them has changed including the packaging.

I suspect that some products are disappearing when the previous price is no longer viable. It may also be the case that they agree a finite production run with a given supplier.

Its all down to head office if they don't sell many they stop stocking them. My younger statistician brother used to work for a big supermarket and his job was to work out what lines and products each store would have on their shelves. Lots of calculations were involved as to how many sold and within certain timescales, how much profit etc.
