Agreed. And there is no obvious reason why it is any more relevant to 'Gone Off' than where it was.

Start a new one where you think it should be and refer to here in your opening post.
The only thing that is constant is change.

Because it makes economical sense for them to stay open; even if increased to 24 hrs (hence the 24/7 Asda) since the electricity and lights are never switched off.

They need only skeletal staff to man graveyard shift; and they can easily cover pittance staff cost even with low patronage during extended hours.

Shelf stackers are probably working after closing hours anyway so it's just a case of allocating them more duties alternating between manning till and stacking. At most they need to hire only one person especially to man the till and that would be more than sufficient for purpose, but I suspect the person will fall asleep on the job if till is the only duty. No extra cost, or very little cost for them to hire one or two (max) more staff and their pittance wages could easily be recovered from sales.

Operating longer hours or not depends on accessibility and availability of labour and if labour is no problem then opening longer hours is shrew business move.

Whenever I go in during the evening there is never anyone sat on the tills, they are busy doing other jobs but always keep an eye out for when you're ready to check out and are straight there to serve you. It's a much less stressful shopping experience during the evening.

Moved to which thread please may I ask?

It's useful to keep it under same thread to benefit from the varieties of the comments.

It moved from the busy 'Food Shopping and Groceries' to 'Gone off' which is rarely used.

Might it be useful to take the opportunity to split into a Lidl and an Aldi thread?

    No, I don't agree.
Splitting means no comparison of the best deals.
Knowing which of the two to go for best deals at useful time is important.
I rather they remain in the same thread.

So on that principle, it would work well for them to extend the hours, since they won't incur extra manpower cost (if using off hours shelf stackers trained to man till as well) when compared to potential increased sale turnover, hence catering to people who prefer to shop at off peak hours.

When Lidl first opened here the pay was good (compared) but the staff had to do any job and also to have a vehicle so as to cover other stores.
The local newspaper took up this last point, called it discrimination etc.

Not really. Archiving this thread and starting a new one (with a link to the old) would be sensible. Why would people want to read through posts from 2012?
