We call for a return to family doctors as the primary source of information as to whether an individual is too sick to work, not a profit-driven plc.

We further call for a new approach to the sick by government whereby such vulnerable people cease to be treated as 'scroungers' particularly when many of these individuals as taxpayers have paid in. the NHS, in some cases for many years.Search for

Personally I'd prefer GPs to actually be treating sick people (and within a short time frame) rather than filling in government forms.

    This isn't reliable.
The problem arises when you don't go to your doctor.
I don't go to my doctor, as there is nothing they can do for me.
I have extremely limited energy, and struggling there on the bus would wipe me out for at least a day, in addition to concerns about my safety on the journey.
Plus, I can only make appointments for at least a few days in advance, which means I don't know if I'll be feeling up to it on any given day.

Given that, and the fact that I spend what limited visits to the doctor trying to solve my current issue (for example, migraine), which might be soluble, rather than CFS, which seems to be much less so - they have very limited information as to my condition. Bordering on useless.

So you should be in favour of the idea then.

Because by having a more accurate assessment in the first place, conducted by a gp, it would stop the GP having to fill in a form in the first place for the DWP, and then stop them having to examine and issue fit notes over the year a person is waiting for appeal.
It would stop people's health deteriorating due to appeals/wrong decisions, and leave them free to concentrate on treating the problem, rather than spending time issuing fit notes and trying to undo further damage caused by the benefit systems screw ups.
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

Still more than ATOS would have.

  • I couldn't help but notice this on the CAB website/forum just now....

    http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/forums/viewthread/2496/

"Yep- it has finally happened (or near enough).

Client’s husband is in hospital in a coma. He was sent ESA50. Client contacted DWP to explain situation and was asked to obtain letter from hospital confirming he is in a coma. Did so. Was told to send it to ATOS rather than local BDC. Did so. Husband has now received decision letter- yep, as he has failed to return the ESA50 without good cause and is therefore capable of work and no longer entitled to ESA….

    You couldn’t make it up."

I can go one better than that. A decision letter stating that my late mother was fully fit and able to work, She had died seven weeks before. We had been waiting months for her claim to be process.

Surely someone with a medical condition that is so serious as to stop them from working should be seeing their doctor regularly anyway? The fact that the doctor might be issuing a sick/fit note as well is only a small and comparatively unimportant part of the process.

I agree a GP should be treating not form filling.

I agree ATOS are c rap, they lie, they make up stories. (not based on hearsay, based on personal experience)

But I don't agree that a gp should be dealing with this, there are too many that would possibly be persuaded to write the forms out how the claimant wants them to.

Ok yes some disabilites/illness don't need to much explaining/proof.

Take MS, you can't fake the test results, lumbar punch/mri etc
Bad back... can be faked, not done that myself so wouldn't know how you would fake it, but it does happen.
Man in a coma, for christ sake a letter confirming from the hospital and he is found fit for work, ott or ott reporting?

The system isn't right, but yes ATOS need to go.

They need to find an independant company that marks based on individual cases, not a bog standard yes or no system, everyone is different.
Doesn't get paid for each they fail (If that is true)
Maybe if the "medicals" were fair, maybe the disabled benefit bashers would back off and stop acusing us of sponging.

I've just started the long slow process to get back to work, only being a casual means i have work 2 whole hours this month, (all with DWP permitted to work) I can only do this when my body is good and ready an not someone who has no knowledge of my illness tells me to. MS you have good days and bad days, i can't predict them so how on earth does someone from ATOS do it.

It's not just me, my poor neighbour, just been diagnosed with lung cancer, and brain tumours, actually just been told she has a few weeks to live, was told last week she needed a medical, Thankfully the hospital nurses/carers stepped in and politely explained that most likely she would not be alive to attend a medical...

There needs to be a big shake up before pip comes in, and that's staff training as a priority. But training to spot the blagger too. And training on medical conditions and how they affect a persons day to day life.

ok apologies for spelling etc, my mouse has decided tonight that it refuses to allow me to left click (right click for the not scrammy handed) so spell check etc is not working and i can't be arsed to do it the long way around even if i could find it.
