Home birth is a far nicer experience than hospital...

.. if that's what the mother wants. Each labour is different and every labour that results in a baby is a successful one. Personally I have no wish to have my baby at home; I'm reassured by modern medicine. Give me a bleeping machine any day over scented candles and some whale music.

But that's up to me, as it's up to all of us. I think it's pointless to say *this* is nicer. It's too personal an experience to compare.

naturally. i only say it for myself of course, having experienced both sides of the coin. pregnancy and birth is a bit of a lottery really, you just never know what will turn up. my sister had a super easy hospital birth first time so she planned a HB for #2, and what do you know, 39 weeks the baby turned full breech and it was a c-section job. i suppose a lot of it is about how you fare with the whole medical setting, some people are reassured by it, some folk keel over at the sight of a needle. horses for courses!

Though I wanted a water birth this time (didn't get it!), I've never fancied a home birth. Firstly, I yell, lots! and would hate to upset the neighbours. :D Secondly, it is nice to just be able to walk away from the experience and leave it separate from my home. But then I have lots of back pain in labour, so loads of things I would like to try just aren't happening. Sitting on a birthing ball was agony, as was trying to kneel/stand.

You can still have a fairly natural birth in hospital though. I only had gas and air, no monitoring of baby/contractions, baby delivered onto me, cord left to finish pulsating before it was cut, and natural delivery of the placenta.

Oh, and home to my own bed same day. :)

Silly Moo, I hope you are not in London, you have to sign up for the good nurseries a year in advance here! Already got DS signed up for DD's nursery but as we are taking DD out at some point during my maternity leave there is no guarantee that still will get back in.

I'm in Scotland so it shouldn't be too bad. There are only two nurseries in the area which are open hours that suit us and they both have waiting lists but we should be fine if we sign up now.

I'm feeling a little put upon today about the whole pregnancy thing so sorry if I came across rather brusquely!

Just been to visit the MIL who, whilst adorable, has got some ideas that frustrate me a little...

Today I was told that I was 'feeling the kicks in the wrong place', that 'breathlessness is not something pregnant women suffer with and there must be something wrong with you' (thanks!), that 'babies never get stuck - that's ridiculous. Women are designed to give birth and it's a myth that babies' shoulders can get stuck', and, my personal favourite... 'having an epidural is cheating'.

Aargh, can you slap your MIL? :D

I had a home birth with my little boy (first baby) and used a la Bassine pool. PM me if you'd like any advice if you're thinking of a home birth, I'm happy to try and help, as I'm not really following this thread any more!

Gosh Fluffnutter, MIL sounds very irritating!

Have had a busy day today, did lots of washing and then got out in the garden for a couple of hours and did some weeding. It's funny how having a baby on the way makes you get more house and garden proud! We have worked so hard on the house in the last few weeks, clearing junk, tidying etc. The nursery is ready to be filled with baby. Then this afternoon I scrubbed the bathroom (must had been at the sink for a good hour!) and had some people come and collect our wedding vases which I had sold on ebay. Got married in last October and have just got rid of them. I'm going to use the money to buy the Precious Bear playmat from Mothercare - it looks so comfy!

Getting nervous for tomorrows scan now, have got my lunch and clothes ready and my pregnancy notes are on the side ready too. Fingers crossed baby's ok!

Hope everyone else is doing well. Very interesting to read about home birth experiences, not something I fancy doing, we have 5 cats and cat hair would get everywhere! I do fancy a water birth though but won't be too annoyed if I don't get it.

I think she's just forgotten what it was like, tbh. All her babies are now in their 40s plus she's French. Kicking out kids in France in the 1960s was probably rather different to the NHS in the UK today. She probably smoked gauloises and drank stella artois throughout her labours. Perhaps that''s why she keeps telling me she doesn't know what all the fuss is about!
