It's not the end of the world if you have to do a bit of shopping after baby arrives, I was out shopping a week after DD arrived. With my first I didn't get much until really near the due date and then got given loads when baby arrived so was glad I didn't get much. Also no need to do up a nursery as you will have at least six months before they might go in their own room. Only really important thing is the car seat if you plan to drive home from the hospital.

Freebies - I think there are some links at the start of this thread. Good idea to try first, we got loads of pampers but they didn't work with our DD at all so gave them away. This time we have gone for a selection and are also have a few 'real' nappies to try and might give natural infant hygiene a go.

    Thanks jennynoo

I was beginning to think I'm the most disorganised person in the world as I'm totally not ready yet. Had a quarrel with my dad today - wanted to ask his advice on cots vs cotbeds and he said it doesn't matter and I can even put the baby under the bed! He should know better than to annoy a hormonal pregnant woman!

We did look at nurseries as we want our DS to start at 6-9 months, forgot to mention this. We saw two but can't make up our mind. I know there are waiting lists so we'll probably need to decide by the end of the week. I was unable to find any reviews on the internet so maybe someone here can help me? Here are the main differences:

    Nursery 1:
    - seemed more colourful
    - at the end of each day parents get a sheet where it's written what the baby was doing, when nappies were changed (and what was in the nappy), what the baby had to eat
    - there was a sink in each room to encourage children to wash hands
    - liked the "no shoes" policy although did see one of the fathers wearing his so not sure if this policy is not only "for show" for prospective parents
    - had a carpet in baby room
    - babies and toddlers up to 2 years old are in the same room
    - cots for sleeping are in the same room with
    - 15 children in the room
    - 5 per day more expensive

    Nursery 2:
    - seemed a bit plain, I don't remember exactly but think the walls were white but maybe they had some "baby art" on them
    - separate room for babies up to 1 year old
    - hard vinyl floor
    - separate sleeping room
    - 9 babies in the room
    - staff in this nursery seemed on average younger than in nursery 1

Apart from the above both nurseries were pretty similar and the managers and all staff seemed very friendly.

We haven't got a car seat but I already decided we wan't a cabriofix so it should be fairly easy to get as they're sold everywhere and the prices don't vary much.

I will have a look at the links you mentioned. I wouldn't like to accidentally register on some dodgy free samples websites!
  • Welcome Kitty not sure how to add you to the list I'm afraid. Are you going to find out the flavour at your scan? I'm a couple of days ahead of you and having my scan at 20+5 I guess it comes down to availability of appointments rather than anything else.
Just been joining the last few baby clubs on my list from a friend this afternoon. Boots, sainsburys and Asda's club seem to give away huggies packs with 27 newborn nappies in. I joined pampers but not really heard anything from them since. Boots club send lots of vouchers for nappies and I think it was Ikkle that was saying to use any vouchers with special offers and she'd got some cracking deals. Got lots of vouchers from tesco the other day and some that are designed for after bubba is born for wipes etc and long expiry dates on.

Silly moo I'm just over 19 weeks and already have most of the stuff with exception of Moses basket which my friend will give once her boy is transferred to his cot ok. I know people think I'm tempting fate etc but it's just my manicness takes over and I like being prepared. Also I've been buying stuff at good prices when I've seen it. I got a load of baby clothes yday via local Facebook site and am resisting the urge to wash them all. I will sort into age groups and wash much nearer the time. And hopefully it'll be better drying weather. A nice task for maternity leave :-) Not started sorting out/decorating the spare room though for the nursery yet! So no where too practical to store all the stuff. Some people don't feel ready until much later in the pregnancy. All I had on my list at the beginning was a buggy/car seat and a cot and if all else fails I guess as long as you have them and a couple of baby grows, nappies and a milk supply the rest you can get quick enough. Yep my little world is a very simple place lol

Hugs Rebekah sounds like a nice chill out day may be the answer :-) hope you're back on good form soon. Maybe it's the cold making you a bit out of puff. Is scary though after my funny turn the other day. If you're still feeling rough tomorrow maybe get checked over by the midwife/GP?

Mummyoftwo I'm also thinking of home birth. I know it's my first and a lot of friends think I'm bonkers but the idea of trekking to the hospital and too many people interfering is not my idea of fun. Did you have a birthing pool at home? Have been looking at bits I'll need to get in, have you any advice? as there seems to be lots of "essential" items.
Emsbet I'm not sure how OH will react to the birth in general. One is thing is for certain if he gets distracted by the tv, as often happens when I'm talking to him, I'll not be a happy mummy. But I think I'll be calmer at home so hopefully he'll be calmer :-)

OH decided we "need" a new tv so has been out most of the day and has come home with a big 3d super special something something tv. I'm not even sure how you get things to be 3d on there? Now he's going to spend hours probably fiddling with it.....boys and their toys eh, what is our son going to be like? Mr Gadget Junior lol.

Kira, maybe your friend could lurk for a bit and get to know us a bit before she says hello if she's nervous. She'll see what we natter about etc. hope her antenatal care is better organised now.

Time for another :coffee: me thinks, maybe a sneaky choccy finger or two

 hello :) I've been a bit a lurker and not posted anything until now, but reading this post I had to post :)
I'm a mummy of 2 girls 7 and nearly 5, and 36 weeks pregnant with my third girl. I had 2 home births and will do so again with this little girl :) My reasons for home birth are I'm terrified of hospitals and needles and everything else that goes with a medical environment
My 1st girl was born at home on gas and air after a 24 hour labour with 2 wonderful midwives in attendance. I couldnt have asked for more. It was explained that if they felt i needed transfering then they would do so but only as an emergancy. i had no problems and Millie was born :)
2nd birth again a planned home birth, 2 not so good midwives in attendance (didnt bring enough gas and air, wanted me the needle phobic to have pethadin etc) didnt discuss my notes with me etc.. when my community midwife came to check on me at 9am in the morning she read my notes and nearly had a heart attack! they said possible breach  she did a VE as I was pushing and said why wasnt an ambulance called neither of the other midwives could answer.... anyway turns out i had to stand up to give birth and Maddie wasnt breach after all but WAS a face presentaion which really really really hurt! but all was well and i didnt tear or anything. in the end it was a positive experiance and I bimped into the midwife who delivered her a few weeks ago.. she recognised me and really wanted to attend this birth too :) unhappily i don't live in the area now so that wouldnt happen but it made my day to see her again.
baby number 3 will be another home birth but with a birthing pool :) Ive got the birth pool in a box with ELECTRIC inflater (takes seconds not hours!!):rotfl: and a water pump for getting rid of the water afterwards.. a thermomitor to keep an eye on the temp and a scoop.. hoses to fill up and tap attachments. it also comes with a liner. we've got all the plastic sheeting and dust sheets to keep everything clean etc.
I can honestly say that even if i wern't hospital phobic i would still have a home birth, the experience of birthing in a familiar environment with 2 midwives there at all times listening to you and reassuring you is fantastic. i feel the hospital births to be a bit like a conveyor belt of women and you're left to labour alone. I don't like this thought!! The midwives stay with you (here) for 4 hours after the birth. they make sure you and baby are all ok, tuck you up in bed or wherever you feel comfy clean EVERYTHING messy away and leave you feeling like you've accomplished something wonderful :D
when it comes to this birth i know when i will be phoning the midwives to come out and i will have got the oh to put up the pool and fill it. Im excited to have a water birth this time around as I have SEVERE SPD and I have to have a wheelchair to get around at the weekends. weekdays i use crutches to move about but i dont lave the house so im feeling isolated (my midwife thinks ive got antenatal depression) she could well be right seeing as i spend my entire time crying:( oh sleeps downstairs on a matress as i make too much noise getting up to go to the loo and generally crying in pain :( in the night. I have to say it may be better for him but i see it as some massive rejection!!

Anyway sorry for rambling i just wanted to say hello ladies and i will post from now on.. thanks for reading my home birth stuff!

Well it's been quite a roller coaster so far, no mummy cuddles yet.

After my last update I went on the monitor and baby was getting distressed. Heart rate was 190+ and my contractions were too intense and frequent without enough dilution. I was prepared for emergency c section, met the anaesthtist but then the drugs calmed baby down again so decision made to wait.

Was due propess number two at 5pm, but heart rate up again so waiting until 7pm. Ifbaby reacts again though I think it'll be a c-section.

Fingers crossed that baby stays calm, hope it's not too long before baby arrives safely and you're having mummy cuddles! Xxxx

Silly Moo, I hope you are not in London, you have to sign up for the good nurseries a year in advance here! Already got DS signed up for DD's nursery but as we are taking DD out at some point during my maternity leave there is no guarantee that still will get back in.

i do love how fast this thread moves!

Home birth is a far nicer experience than hospital, and surprisngly you dont need too much gear. i didnt have a pool, instead i took an old single duvet, and some decorating dust sheets, and made a plastic duvet cover, if you get me. then slipped an old cover over that, so make a decent sized 'birth quilt'. picked out the oldest of the towels, put them aside for the birth, and replaced with new for the towel cupboard. stocked the cupboards with nice biccies for the midwives! once i hit 37 weeks, the midwife brought a scary box of birthing equipment, but its all the resus gear and delivery stuff. she also gave me a prescription for the drugs i would need as i had to get them and store in my fridge for the big day. apart from that, job done. on the day itself i thought baby may be coming so the midwife came out and checked me, i was at 4cm with a bulging water bag so she suggested a long walk and a bath. called her back about 2pm as i was contracting every 2-3mins. Fin was delivered at 6.07pm on the sofa, and my mum popped in to change my bed for cosy fresh sheets, i had a quick bath and went to bed with baby and hubby. the next morning my sitting room was pristine, you wouldnt have a clue we had had a baby in there! i think the tone in which i speak of the experience shows how dear it is to us as a family. I also found breastfeeding so much easier with my son - when i had my daughter she was full of pethidine and she just refused all attempts to BF.

now who said about being too organised??? so such thing either way!!! if you feel happier having things ready well thats awesome, and if not people tend to inundate you with stuff anyway. This poor child will barely have a thing new - still have all my sons stuff, and i got a pram last week for the bargain price of £25!

feel sick. made millionaires shortbread with the youngest but its tooooooo yummy to leave alone:rotfl:
  • Hi Miss Money
Welcome and thank you for your informative post. To be honest I work in a hospital and while it's great when you're sick or with broken bones the idea of birthing there isn't what I've been dreaming of all these years. I've got dodgy (well hyper mobile) hips and it's turned into proper SPD now, am walking with a stick and seeing physio. Not much how if I can go back to my job ATM may have to go and sit in a clinic somewhere. So I sympathise with your pain. It's driven me mad and to tears. Also why I'm thinking a water birth to relieve some pressure and also I don't want strangers pulling my legs apart in the heat of the moment lol. That sounds a bit odd.
Can I ask where you got your pool from? And all the relative stuff? I read about the electric pump, can imagine it'll take forever to do it by foot and I'm sure not going to be huffing and puffing doing it whilst in labour.
You sound really organised, do you know if you're having a boy or girl? Don't feel isolated, we're all here to help each other and cheer each other up. At times when I've feel lonely here I've come on here to talk of chocolates and stalking robins and it's always made me giggle :-) :grouphug:xxxxx

Hiya :) thanks for the welcome :)
I got my pool from here https://www.birthpoolinabox.co.uk/birth-pool-eco-regular you can tick what you want to come with it. It came within 48 hours! for the dust sheets and plastic sheeting i went to homebase (buckets were cheap too) the electric pump literally takes about a minute or two to inflate the pool and not the hours by foot it would with a foot pump. If anything Id highly recommend the electric pump and also the sumbmersible pump for getting rid of the water after!!
I found in my home births i was encouraged to go with how my body felt and because of my spd (having it in all pregnancies) I got to say how i laboured and in what postion and I was never told "no" i was gently advised that ice cream would make me sick but i ignored it lol and it made me sick! the only thing im not looking forward to is the anti d injection i will have to have :( I sob my way through injections and blood tests :( i have to have emla cream on to numb the pain. Im actually looking forward to the birth as it means the pain of the spd will go!!! and hopefully i will be able to walk again. Ive been bad with it since 16 weeks pregnant. :(

    Hi to everyone,
natwesty, hope you get mummy cuddles soon.
silly moo, I wouldn't panic about not being organised enough. It may be helpful to make a list of what you need and buy things as you find what you like/good offers.

I'm 33 weeks, we have the pram, cot and moses basket. Still need clothes, bedding, and other bits. We're buying things as we see them though have kicked up a gear over the last week as my doctor told me I needed to be prepared.

I've had free nappies, wipes and other bits from the baby clubs at Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Boots and Huggies. - got a mixture of 90 pampers and huggies newborn nappies through freebies so I'm not buying any until baby is born and I know their size.

Will get a couple of vests/sleep suits before birth but generally planning on sending relatives out to buy more once we know what size the little one is going to be :)

I'm home alone for the next few days and it's already a bit weird. OH only left 2 hours ago and the house feels really quiet. It'll be interesting to see whether I sleep worse or better with having the bed to myself for the next two nights, either way it'll feel odd. My OH didn't want to leave me, he was very sweet but it's a work thing and though I could have tagged along and spent the days in Winchester while he was working I decided that as I get worn out just walking around the house at the moment I'm better off at home.
