I am back! The scan was fine, upsetting again, as I couldn't see anything - she showed me the screen for 30 sec before any measurements, and after for about a minute or two and took some of the worst photos you can imagine - you can barely see the baby! She would get a nice view, and then move the probe and take a picture!!! I said to OH I want a private scan so that I can see babies as well, not just he!!!! It just feel so unfair - I have to carry them, get through all the pregnancy woes, and he just comes for the scans and get all the show! Am I expecting too much? How are your scans? Do you also get the 'crumbs'?

No - you are not expecting too much, they sometimes don't think about the person, just about their timetable. I don't blame you for being upset, I felt much the same but thought it was just me being a bit sensitive - glad it's not just me! We did have a private gender Scan for £50 and I have to say it was so personal, the view is much different, on a TV so resolution is clearer rather than a little monitor. I was desperate to find out gender, but so so glad I got a private one now too.

Also, she asked me if I got the date for the next scans, and when I said I will be having them every 4 weeks, she sort of said why? Who told me that. I said the consultant, and it is in my notes, but she was sort of questioning if there is any reason for that or did I have any previous issues or something. It is not her bloody job to do this!

It isn't her job you are right and don't think anymore about it - the consultant sets the care level - end of!!! Grrr for you!

Anyway, she didn't notice any anomalies, the femour, head and abdominal circumferences measure more or less the same, so I am happy they are growing at a similar rate. And, we possibly have one foot in each team! She wasn't very sure of either of them, she couldn't get a decent view, but she thinks one of them is a boy, s she could see something (like testies) on one of them, but then with the second one she could get the right view, but thought it is probably a girl. So, we cannot be sure, but possibly, it is one of each!

Brilliant news that all is measuring ok. Some babies just seem to be a bit shyer, mine deff was and I know Lisa26's has been, although she doesn't want to know. Do some research for private scans, sure your OH will understand.

This might be quite contrivertial but.....

I think a lot of this "do that" and "don't do that" is rubbish.

Many thousands and millions of women had babies before any of this advice came to light and probably did allsorts of things during pregnancy that we think we shouldn't.

For example raw meat and alcohol were a stable part of diets and hygiene levels were awful, but they were ok. Cows milk would have come straight from the cow!

What I think I am trying to say is - don't beat yourself up, I know easier said than done, but try not to let it stress you out. If Lysteria was a contributing factor you would have been told about it.

Thanks. I found this from McDonalds which states (Question 26) that they use pasturised milk in their milkshakes so I'm less worried now.

Gin, I'm sorry your scan didn't go as well as you would like but good news that both babies are doing well. Exciting that you might be having one of each flavour.

    xx

Thanks! I am fine, I just brushed it off - as it was the same last time at 12 week scan, although that was in the 'big' hospital. OH laughed that next time he will bring a mirror and stand there showing the view to me! I have next one in 4 weeks (Feb 23), but if it is again the same, I still want the private one, even though it feels silly to be paying money when I am getting scans every four weeks anyway!

Since all is ok, we are going to visit his family in two week (weeks holiday), and I suggested to him, that if his mum would like, she could find the private place there (Italy), and we can go all. Apparently, she was telling him the other day when that she was talking to a friends, and told her that she has seen the pictures of her grandchildren to come, and the friend said she only seen hers after they were born, so MIL was a bit boasting/chuffed.

Sorry to hear the scan didn't go too well Gin. I wonder how experienced your sonographer is because their approach to you seems deplorable.

I've been quite lucky that I get to see everything with mine but the only problem is that lying on my back stops me from breathing so I have to move around and adjust alot with the help of towels and pillows.

Your notes should clearly state that you have a scan every four weeks especially as you are having twins. Are they DCDA twins? Cos it could be more regular i think if they aren't.

I'm also going to do a private 4d scan but I read somewhere that its best done between 24-32 weeks.

I'm glad your babies are measuring well, mine are small which is a worry but all the blood flows and movement seem to be ok which the doctors seem happy with.
  • For anyone worrying, my brother is a manager at McDonalds and he tells me the milkshakes and mcflurrys are all pasteurised so no need to worry. Also a good job as i seem to be finding myself in possession of them more and more. Not really sure how it happens but on my travels they just magically make their way into my car.
Glad your scan went well Ginvzt and that babies are measuring good.
Im 28 weeks today...not sure where the time has gone too. Had an awful dream again last night and woke up very upset. Men are such idiots...well the ones i associate with are. Just found out my babys father who couldnt run away fast enough is now seeing someone else and they are milling round with his other children like Superparents. It honestly beggars belief but there you go.
Hope everyone has a nice day

OMG! I didn't know this, I had quite a few McDonalds milkshakes last time I was pregnant! I'm having major guilt now :(

    xx

Emsbet, the issue with things like milkshakes and ice-cream is an increased risk of listeriosis (from listeria), if you picked it up it would have made you ill as well as affecting the baby so you would have known about it at the time. It can be pretty nasty so you'd def have known about it. The others are right, what happened was not your fault. chin up hun xx

They non-identical, with separate sacks and placentas. The consultant said last time i will have scans and appointments every 4 weeks, but just looked again at the notes, and it says scans at 20, 28, 32 and 36 weeks. Opps - I booked one for in 4 weeks time! Will see consultant in 4 weeks and ask about it, if anything, will cancel this one (24 week one)...

That's probably true, but to be honest, the worry I would be putting on myself if I knowingly ate something that may have been dodgy, would be just too much. So I personally avoid risky foods for this reason alone.

Just looked at NICE guideline, and this is what is says:
    Monitoring for intrauterine growth restriction
    • Estimate fetal weight discordance using two or more biometric parameters at each ultrasound scan from 20 weeks. Aim to undertake scans at intervals of less than 28 days. Consider a 25% or greater difference in size between twins or triplets as a clinically important indicator of intrauterine growth restriction and offer referral to a tertiary level fetal medicine centre.
1.2.3.6 Offer women with uncomplicated dichorionic twin pregnancies at least eight antenatal appointments with a healthcare professional from the core team. At least two of these appointments should be with the specialist obstetrician.

    • Combine appointments with scans when crown–rump length measures from 45 mm to 84 mm (at approximately 11 weeks 0 days to 13 weeks 6 days) and then at estimated gestations of 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 weeks (see 1.7.1.1).
    • Offer additional appointments without scans at 16 and 34 weeks.

So, I think I will keep my appointment anyway, just need to show this to consultant next time.

Lucy, i'm exactly the smae. i do think that most of it is ridiculous and probably mostly unnecessary but I can't just ignore it as if anything went wrong I would never forgive myself, especially if it was something that they couldn't say if it had been caused by what i had done.

I'm more sceptical about alot of the stuff they tell you about new babies though, for example not bathing them at first, not using talc etc. And to me these top and tail bowls are silly! Surely you just use your common sense and wash the face before the bottom half?!

Just been having a panic as baby wasn't moving but have fed it some choc and its had a good wriggle now!!

Oooh and have just been and topped up the car with fuel, DH and his Dad are predicting there may be fuel shortages or significant increases in prices atleast as the Iran situation is looking dodgy, a huge refinery down south has gone bust and a load of tanker drivers at a big refinery near us are on strike for a week so lots of dodgy things occuring in the petrochem industry. Might be worth topping up, especially if like us you do alot of driving.
