sexymouse, have you looked at ikea? Some of their slightly more expensive ranges are really good quality. We've got Leksvik(?) drawers and bedside tables and haven't had any problems with the bottoms bowing despite being jam-packed! (although they are fibreboard I think).

I personally like the Hemnes, Vallvik (v similar to Leksvik) and Aspelund ranges :)

    Afternoon ladies,

Hope you all well? Am posting from my hospital bed atm and feeling very sore lol just wanted to let you all know that Max Hedley John was born this morning at 9.52am. He weighs a tiny 3lb 12oz as there were some undetected issues with the placenta and he was not putting on weight, he is in neo natel at the moment and is expected to stay there for a day or two... He's got a good set of lungs on him, an excellent grip and huge feet! I will post a piccie as soon as I can work out how to off my phone :)

    Hope everyone ok,

    Jovi xx

    Congratulations jovi!!

Morning all - I'm another one who didn't get much sleep - although I have a very good reason. I gave birth to the most beautiful little girl on Monday morning!!:j:j:j after 30 hours of labour . I don't want to freak all the lovely pregnant ladies out but I think it's fair to say that I was unfortunate and had a rather painful one. Being a first timer, my body took a long time to figure out what was happening so even though they started out only 3 minutes apart, it still took 14 hours of having contractions every 3 minutes at home before my waters broke and when I got to the hospital, I was still only 2cm dilated. A low blood platelet count ruled out the water birth I was hoping for, and it also ruled out an epidural which I would have used because the process just took so long. By the time I was 10cm dilated, I had been in labour for over 26 hours. After two and a half hours of seriously determined pushing, the baby just couldn't make her head around the bend so I was sent to theatre, given a spinal, an episiotomy (along with the large tear I managed to get while in labour/pushing) and a forceps delivery at 8.30am.

Couldn't believe it when they announced it was a girl! I've been convinced for the last 9 months I was having a boy. Anyway, I know all mothers say this, but she really is beautiful. All the midwives in the labour ward commented that they'd never seen a newborn with so much hair!! She looks absolutely nothing like me or DH either! I'd do it all 10 times over because she's just so adorable!

Anyway, I got home Tuesday evening after pretty much insisting on it - they wanted me to stay another night but I couldn't handle another night of listening to other people's babies crying and constantly checking if it's yours. You can't sleep in a communal labour ward!! Breastfeeding was a real chore the first few days and was ready to give up but a community midwife visited yesterday and showed me a much easier way of doing it than I was taught in the labour ward and we've been feeding every 3 hours or so since. She's great during the day, she's not a fan of the moses basket though - she sleeps fine in your arms or lying on a pillow on the sofa during the day when someone can watch her but it means I ended up giving up on the idea of sleeping around 4am and have been watching her sleep on the sofa for the last three and a half hours. Going to wake her up now for a feed and then let DH take over on the babysitting front so I can catch some sleep.

Any suggestions on how to get over the moses basket conundrum gratefully accepted! She falls asleep in my arms in no time, when I put her down in the moses basket, she starts whimpering after about 3 minutes. Will usually make plenty of "crying in her sleep" noises for anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes before she resorts to full on crying.

    Congrats Nora!!

mrs manda, have you got a gym ball thingy? I think sitting/rocking/bouncing on one of those is supposed to help baby get into the right position.

Having said that, I'm sure I read somewhere that some babies don't actually engage until labour starts. I don't think my baby is engaged yet either - although my bump is quite low, I haven't got that "bowling ball between the legs" feeling!

Some babies don't engage until contractions are well under way.

MrsManda, how about squatting down, getting your hand on his arse and pushing him down into your pelvis whilst making 'going for poo-poo' noises. This is a tried and tested method of encouraging a baby's head to engage and has been incorporated into the active birth methodology. *

    * It hasn't. Most of what I post is nonsense.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl nora - hope you're recovering from the birth well and not too sore.

Well I've just spent the morning trawling the internet for white bedroom furniture for the nursery/spare room that has solid bottoms to the drawers (as in not the fibreboard that we currently have that bows and ends up not fitting). Has anyone come across any nice white bedroom furniture on their travels? We're not fussed about it being children's furniture, as we'd like it to be able to be used for the long term. We were given some money for our wedding last year that we'd like to use towards it, so it doesn't have to be the cheapest of the cheap, but at the same time, we don't want to spend an absolute fortune on it either. I've had a look at the provence range on pine solutions, and that seems to be quite good, but wondered if there was anything else out there?

Sexymouse.... We got these white drawers for our nursery...they are tall but I think they do shorter versions too...they were quite pricey but they are solid pine with solid pine drawer bottoms

    Congratulations arrival.

I'm home now. Exam was evil but pretty sure I skimmed a pass and if I didn't yesterday's wa good enough to compensate I think.

Baby going a bit mental. He's had hiccups for first time as is currently somersaulting about. Probably excited no more written exams. :)

Gonna get some food and have a nap I think. My dd comes back Saturday from her dads cat wait to see her :)
love you lots like jelly tots :o

Just to let you all know... just walked past our M&S and they have a 50% off sale on. There was no newborn bits and nothing neutral (but there could be in your local one!) but they did have some lovely bits from 3-6 months for quite cheap. If you know what you are having it might be worth raiding the sizes and finding bits to buy and put away :)

  • sexymouse, we've just bought our furniture from boori. Went to view it in John Lewis then bought direct on their UK website. This furniture is lovely and solid and they do it in white (we went for the antique teak stain).
