  • What I have a problem with is people who know me, know what I'm like but still try to walk past the mat with shoes on. So basically I have to ask everytime they come. Why? I really don't understand it. They've been before, they know how I feel but yet still I have to ask them. MIL is by far the worst for this.

Maybe they are hoping that one day you'll stop asking them to take their shoes off because they don't like it. Maybe they don't realise that it's so important to you - it's clearly not important to them. Even your OH wouldn't follow the rules if you didn't nag him so it's not surprising MIL doesn't oblige. Perhaps MIL gets cold feet, is comfortable in her shoes and absolutely hates having to take them off every time she goes to your house.

Could you explain to your MIL how important it is to you and offer to keep a pair of slippers (just for her) for when she visits? She possibly has no idea how much it bothers you.

I didn't realise there were so many people paranoid about their floors!!!! If folk are that fussed about marks on the carpets, then get a serviceable colored carpet for the living room! White or cream is just asking for trouble IMO!

For me its nothing to do with the carpet not being a serviceable colour. Its the thought of it not being clean. We enter into room with wooden floor and I still make everyone take off their shoes.
In my opening post I asked what way I should/could ask people to remove shoes without causing offence. From this thread I have realised I will always annoy someone with my rule.:o

Everyone who knows me knows I have ocd's and that I can't help it. I have bought her slippers (just for her). My house is boiling everyone tells me it too hot.

Yeah, the no-shoes friend I mentioned earlier spent the first few years of her kids' lives carting them off to the doctor for one thing or another. I don't think they ever got to build up an immune system. They are never allowed out of the house without being fully clothed and shod, whereas my kids would spend endless hours mucking about in the garden with very little clothes and often barefoot, in all weathers. They are rarely ill.

Again, it's just a different lifestyle but kids need exposure to germs. Otherwise, as soon as they go to pre-school or nursery, they are going to catch every bug going.

I wouldn't but I have seen plenty of people who do!

You would be amazed at the amount of people who don't even wear clean pants, let alone socks!

My friend has OCD (although it does not bother her if people wear shoes indoors), so I do know how crippling it can be. In your case I would just say to people something like 'I hope you don't mind if I ask you to remove your shoes, it's something that is really important to me, hope you understand', with a smile on your face, and I'm sure you won't offend people.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

If that was the case, then they would never get beyond the wooden floor room.

I must of been lucky up to now. I have never had anyone in my house with dirty socks.
