    Clean shoes?
I am sorry, in the past 30 days it was not peeing it down here for about 18 hours in total...
Maybe it is where I live.

Anyway, I said my piece. I can't see it a problem and that is it. I will do as my hosts want me to do.
Fortunately I never had to ask anyone to take their shoes off and hopefully never will have.

Probably right if you live in Manchester - I went there for uni and the amount of rain astonished me :rotfl:

Now Im back in the south I dont have to worry about wet shoes in the house much - its probably only rained here for 18 hours in past 30 days lol

But when it does rain or someone has muddy shoes, I would ask someone to take their shoes off if needed - but I dont ever really need to, because they do anyway.

As for the age thing - we always took our shoes off at both of our grandparents houses 25 years ago and do now. I dont see how its an age thing.

So is it just floors that bother you, or are you like that with everything?
    No not everything
  • You would be amazed at the amount of people who don't even wear clean pants, let alone socks!

We don't have a shoes policy in our house but we do in the Dojo and Yoga Centre I sometimes teach at. Whether I am teaching or not anyone come into a class I am taking part in with shoes on (other than indoor shoes which I do not expect to see them wearing outside but have) gets asked to go back outside to the landing and remove their shoes.

If you had ever put your hand on a bit of road grit or worse while doing a downward facing dog in yoga or a breakfall at Ninjutsu you would understand why. It's traditional in many martial arts and in yoga anyway.

Despite this I do get people who protest about it or ignore it and I have even refused to teach someone who continually broke the rule. As a beginner I trained in totes toasties for the first couple of months as I had circulation problems at the time and found my feet got to cold going barefoot.

Memo to self: when visiting someone's house, check the T&C nailed to the front gate and read (twice) the door policy. If neither of these are on display the house is safe to enter.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Hmm, she is determined not to play ball, then. You seem to have done everything possible to make it easy for her to do as you wish. Have you talked to her about it?
Yes she knows how I feel

Another point about taking offence - if someone asked me to take off my shoes, I would not take offence at all. I know that some people are much more house-proud than I am. But likewise, I'm not keen on trotting about with no footwear, at least not in the winter.
I can assure you your feet would be lovely and warm here.

If someone turned up at your house in mid-summer wearing (apparently clean) flip-flops - would you want them to take them off - just wondering.
I dont want them to take them off or leave them on if I'm honest cos most people with flip flops have dirty feet. So I let them leave them on. haha
And if you go outside briefly - to the dustbin say - would you change into outdoor shoes before doing so, then change back when you get back in?
I have a pair of slippers with hard soles that are on the mat next to the door. I put these on to go into the garden, and take them back off on the mat when I step back inside.
I suppose I'm just trying to understand why you feel you must always have a no-shoes rule, even though some of your family clearly don't want to go along with it. Is it purely down to your OCD tendencies, you just can't bear the thought of it?
Now I've had to really think about it. Its a lot to do with the thought of it. But regarding the carpet, I dont want it ruined. No way in my opinion does hoovering clean dirt. The people across the road have a filthy hall carpet, because they walk straight in without taking off shoes. When we sold our last house the people who viewed it all thought we had just put new carpet down infact they had been down for 10 yrs.

I slightly agree, except I would view it as somewhat passive aggressive behaviour. In any case, I do NOT believe any of these 'shoes off' posters would tell the Queen to take her shoes off should she decide to pop in for a cuppa.

Your post reminded me of an old aquaintance(sp?) who asked for his egg to be freshly cooked in a motorway cafe. They refused so he asked if they'd cook Prince CHarles a fresh egg if he came in. They said they would so he said 'well he's not coming so I'll have his'. I digress...

The Queen maybe, my MIL, never!

My house my rules is not absolute anyway, is it?

It's a very childish statement tbh. I don't know anyone who acts the same way in their house when they have guests and when they don't (with the exception of the fictional Jim Royle). I do all sorts of things when I'm home alone that I would never do with a guest in the house. I often have long phone conversations with my mother when I'm at home but if she called when I have a guest I'd cut it short as to continue on the phone would be rude. I would do everything in my power to avoid having an argument with my husband in front of guests because it would make them feel dreadfully uncomfortable. And lets not get started on bodily functions.

My house; my rules, only goes so far. If you invite other people into your home you have a certain social duty to make them feel comfortable. Obviously that is within limits but asking someone to remove an item of their clothing does make some people feel incredibly uncomfortable, perhaps for very good medical reasons and in those cases 'my house: my rules' can sound a lot like 'screw you guys I'm going home.'*

Ive just touched wood, but I cant remember the last time anyone in this house hold had a cold or a bug.

Anyway thats a myth. More people get cold etc in Winter because they are in confind spaces together for warmth. Where as in Summer you tend to spend more time out doors and have more windows open. So you're not all breathing in the same air so to speak.
