yeah, you can still get into accountancy doing AAT and then going on to do ACA/ACCA off the back of it, but the reality is that most of the AAT trainees now have degrees as well, and the majority of people who do well out of it are degree holding ACA/ACCAs. allegedly the average salary for an ACA is now over £100,000. i would have thought the average salary for someone who just did AAT with A levels and didn't go on to do ACA/ACCA is under £30k.

i should think that in excess of 95% of ACA/ACCA trainees have degrees, so whilst you can technically get into the profession without a degree, your chances of doing so are pretty slim.

I expect this is the the same with solicitors, and in particular you're unlikely to get a training contract at a city law firm without a 1st class degree from a very highly ranked university (unless your dad works there of course - nepotism is still pretty handy).

Yes, thats exactly what i mean. Still means that it is not, or hasnot in recent history, been possible, and possibly preferable for this not to be the case.

OH always says that his degree (accountancy) stifled him. Armed with a 2.1 from a red brick it was too easy to get a decent job in a major accountancy firm, get his ACA and follow a well-routed career path.

this is another thing which i think is a bit odd about our degree system - i don't know how old your OH is, but when i came through the system graduating in 2000, an accountancy degree didn't actually give you any sort of competitive advantage in applying for a training contract at an accounting firm. this is probably because degrees are getting dumbed down to the point that they aren't really a meaningful qualification. the few people i trained with who had accountancy degrees didn't score any better in any of the exams, and weren't any better at their jobs when we first started working.

in other countries you have to have a relevant degree to go on to do the job - as far as i understand you cannot go on to become an accountant in australia, for instance, without an accountancy degree. presumably this is because you cannot just catch up and learn all the relevant things they learn in a 3 year degree course in 4-6 weeks of college time...

I use a manual. We have an electeic,*but it went into storage years ago and stilll have n't found it. Thopugh technology has improved i daresay and a new brush would be in order.

My teeth are shot though. One fake one (broken it several times, each time a little more) and just general damage..,..the stuff they should drum home to girls not eating properly about what it does to your teeth, then neglect while very ill. Its a shame, my teeth are in alright places and would have been naturally ok.

    * no wheezy, this is me ;)

We graduated 15 years before you. I suspect that in that 15 years the proportion of people with degrees increased massively. In 1985 having a degree in a relevant subject showed your were keen on it.

I think it takes dictation software to go that wrong.

My dentist reckoned my teeth and gums improved massively when I went electric.

His advice was to buy last years new model. One year on and you should be able to find it less than half price and if it was "the best thing" last year it will do a good job this year.

    Toothbrush shopping for PN:

    Last year's model at 39.99:

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4433484.htm

    The year before at 26.99

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4434658.htm

This year's super douper offering at 149.99

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4480891.htm

Even the one at 26.99 gives a little beep after 30 seconds to remind you to move to the next quadrant and switches off after 2 minutes.

Btw nice people, talking about electric things, i have been using my face brush for four days and i like it a lot. My face feels very clean. Reading material says a flush of spots is likely in a few days, but so far my skin looks good. I did feel a spot coming up on satirday morning but the magic brush seemed to calm it down and i niticed this morning it has just....vanaished. which is good. Its no good getting spots in your thorties, especially when you didn't get very many in your teens. :(

Ruddy hell, my vowels are all over the show today.
