Vacuum storage bags ... when you first discover them you think "genius!" then you try one out and you think "go large - get the biggest... big = good". But here's the lowdown....

Big is NOT good. Once vacuumed up, you're dealing with an odd-shaped, and quite heavy, plastic bag. So, it needs protecting, usually put into a box or suitcase or something.... trouble is, finding one that's big enough. All my boxes are quite small as I only possess boxes I am physically able to carry/lift.

I think putting each one into rubble sacks might be a solution though.... have to pick some up when I'm next in a shop.

Put the vacuum bag in the box, then fill, then evacuate the air (well about 80% of it I guess).
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Sorry lir, I know that's not funny and was probably really scary at the time. However that really made me laugh. Laugh uncontrollably at the mental picture of your misfortune. I imagined the tiniest Italian car being inflated with the largest killer duvet which then started pushing out of all the tiny little pop out windows.

I think evil viva has taken me over and I should leave this thread forthwith.

    Its ok, i laugh too.

I was really tired because i had not slept the night before with excitement. The cats travel fine, but mauve squeaker decided after the tunnel train she had been in the car long enough and started to wail, and wailed right through france. There was the worst rainfall there has ever been in the history of man, then when it wasn't raining their was inpenitrable fog, i literally could not see past the end of my bonnet. Then mont blanc had road works and no sugnage and i kept being scared i would end up going down the wrong side of a motorway or tunnel and drive to my death, then the pot holes on italian motor way and one of those resulted in the rip/puncture to the back. So as i entered iptaly i was in a normal but somewhat white knuckled driving position and by the time i entered milan i was sitting with my knees either side of the steering wheel and my chin able to beep the horn:rotfl:

I don't think they need protecting, they are pretty high grade plastic but I do agree that too big is not that good as the different contents don't shrink evenly so you end you with something pretty lumpy and irregular and also heavy. I also find quite a few fail either immediately or you come back months later and they are big again - may be I put the wrong things in or buy too cheap ones of ebay though!
I originally bought some in 2009 - and none failed. Once opened, you could still smell the washing powder smell as everything had gone in clean. Upon trying to re-use the bags, I've found one that's split near the zip-up region, which could be repaired, if one needed to, using some strong gaffa tape.

LIR has some experience of bags unfurling, in a moving vehicle .... and a cat having its space invaded.

Re storage bags. I have a few of the small ones and some of the mediums. The cheap ones are rubbish, but the expensive brand ones are great. My favourites are the small ones that you roll up rather than vacuuming, allowing you to get more in your suitcase.

Actually, thinking about it, having cats near something plastic using vucuum, was pretty stupid. Still, we all survived, and i will not do it again.

But then is your lugagge not very, very overweight?

Even if i take a very small pull along the chances are it weighs more than it should. I often have to repack and shuffle at the airport if i have not weighed it at home.

The shape of the boxes I have is cube. The storage bags are rectangles. With the right sized bags, I can get 4-5 bags in a box. One bag/box wouldn't make any sense.

Maybe keeping an eye out in supermarkets, with a tape measure, might yield some right-sized-boxes.... I did measure the under-the-bed plastic boxes I have, but they're 30x60. The bags I have are in the ranges 50x60, 60x100.

A good rubble sack would do though. - when I was moving my bags into the house my dad tried to help and just "grabbed" at the biggest vacuum bag, potentially enabling it to rip. Putting them in a rubble sack gives them a good strong grabbing area, so that'd work.
