Hate those vacuum bags. Moved to italy with them in the car, one behind the drivers seat burst and started to reinflate pushing my seat forward.

Sorry lir, I know that's not funny and was probably really scary at the time. However that really made me laugh. Laugh uncontrollably at the mental picture of your misfortune. I imagined the tiniest Italian car being inflated with the largest killer duvet which then started pushing out of all the tiny little pop out windows.

I think evil viva has taken me over and I should leave this thread forthwith.

Can I please ask the NPs a favour? Can you explain to me how cashback sites like Quidco work? I've tried looking into these in the past but for whatever reason just didn't get it. Is there a benefit in it for me and how do I access it? What is the best one to use or do I have to use several. I don't buy masses over the net and have registered for sites in the past but they wouldn't give you money back until you get to a set amount and that took me ages to get to.

Fwiw I do most of my online shop with Amazon as you can get pretty much everything there, the prices are good and they are extremely reliable.

    Thanks everyone.

Just to expand on PN's description...

You join and login to Quidco (or one of the others) then use the link in Quidco to go to the retailer/ product you wish to purchase. That way you will receive the quoted cashback.

The first step is for the cashback to track, which can take from minutes to a few days. This means everything has gone through as it should and you should receive your amount into your account in a month or two.

You have to be careful that you don't go straight on the retailers site the same day you try to use Quidco or it wont track. The way around this is to clear your cookies then go through Quidco and all should be fine. Quidco costs £5 per year.

I'm like you in that I don't use ebay but love Amazon. Quidco is still worth it overall and I don't always use it when I can. Dell and Tesco have been best for me as far as I remember.

Some on here will have thousands of cashback but my modest amount has been gained since 2006...

I've deleted a bunch of postings from last night... if anybody's quoted me regarding my tea, please delete your quotey bit. Had a PM that I should delete it as it's sensitive.

I was thinking about that too. Good move.

Ahh, Dell, good point. I do get lappys and bits and bobs from them. I wonder if it connects to the outlet too. £301 has got my ears pricked up too.

Car and household insurance, mobile phone contracts and switching gas and electric supplier can be some of the biggest cashback earners. There is a rewards scheme for employees of a well known airline (used to advertise in the ABCNews in house newspaper when I worked there) which is basically the same thing packaged differently.

    Dell often give 7-9% cashback

Honestly, my amount has been gained with very little effort and I've often forgot to use it. I'm sure someone will come along that has gained far more any minute.

I'd be surprised if michaels isn't in to 4 figures.

Sorry, I probably said more than I should have too. Got a bit over-excited that I knew what you were talking about!

My quidco is 3458.60 but not used them since 2008.
    DW Quido 1274
    My TCB 2059
    DW TCB 584

Just from personal spend although the quidco is boosted because you used to be able to get about £120 on car insurance (now 20-60) so I used to take out policies and switch after 4 months once the cashback had paid out getting effectively free insurance :)
    I think....

B*gger. Have just done the insurances, my timing sucks! I can't switch my energy supplier because there are only two in the country for my tariff (we're all electric here). Will speak to DH about the airline one. I wonder if you know each other... Perhaps need to revert to PM on that question!

Following on from PNs answer, car insurance is probably the best way up thinking of it. In the past insurance brokers would find you a policy with one of the big insurance companies and take some commission from the money you paid for the policy to cover their business costs and profit. When insurance moved on line the sites like 'compare the meerkat' and 'confused.com' offered the same service, when you do a search on one of these sites and then click through to buy the policy from an insurance company the company pays the search site a commission.

The cashback sites model is that rather than the commission going to a search site it can go straight back to the purchaser (less a small cut to run the cashback site). The level of cut varies, some sites pay in 'points' or similar to the exact commission payment is hard to ascertain. Others pay cash, some offering '100%' of commission refunded (they still make a profit as they earn bonus commission for reaching higher levels of transactions). The two main players are quidco (£5 annual fee payable only if you make more than £5 in each year) and topcashback (free).

As well as the insurance companies lots of other retailers also pay other sites if they bring shoppers to their website (this is how PN makes money from her brilliant informative articles) so you can shop at Debenhams online for example and get about 6% of your total purchase bill back. As PN says it generally takes 2-3 months for the money to come through.

2 warnings. In the past a few sites ahve gone broke and people have not ben paid out. Also getting your money depends on the IT working properly that the shop knows and rewards the site that sent you to their site. This is done using 'cookies' which tll the shop where you have come from. This does not always work smoothly, your browser security may block the tracking or you may have visited the sites directly or from another link first and the tracking becomes confused.

Amazon do pay some referral commission but in their T&C it is not permitted to pass this on as cash so generally cashback is not available for them but I think they may be on some of the sites that give points rather than cash?

Topcashback have a scheme to encourage new members, if you wanted to use them and asked me or someone else with an account I and you could get a £5 bonus.

    Spot the professional :D

Can you please delete the quoted part you replied to here. Thx.

I didn't remove the quote - just edited it a fair bit. No words added, just some removed. :)

    It now says:
Well, .. going to speak cryptically..What can I say ... Now, I'm HUGE, and I don't feel happy.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
