How old are the parents? Do you need to think ahead to when they are frailer and may need to stop driving? Or is that still a long way off?

Only looking fopr one parent, they are divorcing, and cannot both live with us. :)

Yes, old and frail is an issue. Old enough to be my grandparent with no law breaking or starting early. Very independant and able to travel, but balks at driving in dark or ice. Today drove to give me a break, and almost killed us, refusedto let me take over, but did ask me to reverse out of a difficult bit. Hence, i would prefer if near a good station for geting to bath and london, both of whoch i imagine will happen very regularly. Highly independant, think always will be independant mind and i would feel uncomfortable if we were in same immediate environ, with situation with my parents iyswim. I am hoping it all remains civil but think would be better not to strain that too much, or frankly , to be at beck and call. Parent sometimes asks me to go over and do something like load printer paper rather than ask other parent, atm i have legitimate excuse to say no, if just down the road i could not plead petrol prices for small things (i of course would go for bigger things)

Ahh, well, could be any where round there, need not be that town, but that sort of distance from me, can you remember where i am? We looked about that far to the east today.

Ideally would have liked bath or malmesbury i think, but not going to find something suitable for parent in budget. Parent wants bigger that that really and would like a bungalow. But bungalows seem really pricey!
No, I can't remember where you live.... I'm a cr4p stalker. I'm sure I have the information somewhere, I just don't keep it on my desktop, constantly adding minutae to everybody's stalker file :)

Also, I just looked at some in the town your "find" is in - and I realised I have no idea of the actual requirements list. e.g. parking doesn't seem to be on your radar..... how far would one have to walk in thep155ing rain with 3 heavy carrier bags of spuds while also trying to carry something important/fragile?

Cool view. That's from the top of Canary Wharf, isn't it?

yes, it's been taken somewhere in 1 canada sq. - it's a rough approximation of what i get to look at when i'm eating my pasties (or hideously overpriced sushi), not sure whether it was taken from the top but given that credit suisse building is about 20 storeys, and 1CS is 50 odd then it does look like it probably was right at the top. i can see over the credit suisse building but I am not that high!!

Parkling is repeat issue everywhere it seems, None of the ones parent likes has it either. Parents favourite is by white lines so cannot park too close and also near shops, so even quite close might be awkward. Parent has a blue badge, so parking would be a considerable bonus, but reliable on street would be 'ok' especially if not needing it for town cente access. Might get one of those disabled dodgem car things

I did think, from the link you gave me, that the house was a bit "twee" and "perfect holiday home" rather than a practical full-time living space. You could see the current person was struggling with where to put stuff.... it's definitely a minimalist person's house - and not for somebody with a large collection of books (we'll have to ignore the expansive furniture collection for now).

Yes, which brings us to the higher list of wants.

Parent wants, while able, to spend some time overseas and let home, or use for holiday lets. That one would be ideal for holiday let, good location for that, and the sort of thing that would rent. I am unsure about finding either tenants for six month furnished lets who she would want to leave furniture with or the expense of letting unfurnished and packing and repacking so often. PlAn a is to spend winter months overseas and summer ones here, or possible, go away for a year now and then come back, but not close option of going for winters until physically unable.

Holiday lets is an idea, but it's worth speaking to the holiday letting agencies in the area to find out how feasible that is. The holiday let I'll be living adjoined to from next week rents out for very little time.... 8-10 weeks/year tops. Everybody says you can do this stuff, but you need to find out the actual figures. Speak to agents about what people want.

Also - the most popular holiday lets are those that allow dogs.... the one I will be next to allows dogs and still only gets 8-10 weeks/year.

The garden room would be perfect for moving her stuff into while she's away - if you're going to be home/away then you need to have easy access to storage of your stuff.... so it's not a pain in the butt when you're moving it in/out. Although, of course, a secure garden structure can easily be bought for those purposes anywhere.

I notice also that the plan would be to spend summer here - those tend to be the peak letting months. Again - check it with agents. It might be that there's nobody that would want to rent a place of that size, in that location, in the months it'd be available.

Now..... you're all posting your pasty eating views, but I suspect you're all cheating/lying.... and those are just nice views close to you that you'd visit if you could be 4rsed....

How many of you have actually sat in those spots and actually eaten a:
    1] Pasty
    2] Hot pasty
    3] Hot, fresh pasty
    4] Hot, fresh, CORNISH pasty?

Because [4] is what was in my hand when I sat today in my pasty eating view spot :)

All (but 1) of your pasty eating views are at the top of hills. Is that because pasty eating makes you fat, so you then roll down the hill?
