You might find Maslow an interesting read. He was an American psychologist who did some great work in the 1950s & 60s about the Heirarchy of Needs.

His idea was that there are a set of needs that must be fulfilled before we can fulfill the next set. As you say LIR, physical needs (food, water, shelter) come first; then freedom from fear. Next is 'love' a part of which is the physical act. The Heirarchy continues from there.

I guess that you could say that broadband is so important in our lives it has become a basic physical need: if you accept that, and believe in Maslow's theories, then it is completely reasonable to state that broadband is more important than sex. Personally, I would include broadband in Self Actualisation but that doesn't make me right, it just means I prioritize things in a particular way.

In my dim and distant memory i did some background reading in 99 or something on hierachy of needs in human psychology, in a library in bristol i only went to a few times.

Cannot remember much about it, but .....seems common sense, no?

It's pretty well known as a theory. It used to be widely accepted but I don't know whether that's still the case.

He's certainly worth a Google and 20 minutes.

Hmmmmm, Sex or Broadband. That is indeed a quandry. I suspect there's some to whom broadband IS their sex life, and it's therefore impossible to disconnect the two...

For me. I'll happily switch to dial-up and keep sex.

My internet bride got delivered today, she's the WiFi always dreamed of.

Needless to say the business broadband is with Virgin :D

On a more serious note though, I certainly wouldn’t give up sex for broadband

    Hey welcome back Malc!!!

F1: I watched the Sky coverage live but missed the first 9 laps as - heaven forbid - I was asleep at 6am. Can you believe it took until the end of the race to find out what happened to Grosjean and Hulkenberg? Not impressed. General coverage was ok though and the people who I know who watched the BBC version seemed happy enough. I went into the off-season convinced Button would edge out Hamilton again this year and nothing I've seen so far suggests otherwise. Want to see more: Perez, Grosjean, Hulkenburg: excited what they can do for rest of season.

On the subject of sex vs broadband. I can go to work and get all the ....... I need (broadband of course).

Nike launched a new Dunk Low sneaker just before St Patrick's Day, and in honour of Guiness named it 'Black and Tan'.

I can't imagine going without a passport. When worked out across 10 years they cost virtually nothing. For most countries you can pop-off abroad at the drop of a hat without a visa should the urge take you. Travel's very important to me: I don't drink, don't smoke, don't take drugs but do spend a lot on holidays. I can't remember the last time I didn't go abroad at least once in a year but it must have been in the late 70s/early 80s, can't be later than that. Plus of course its a form of photo ID which is useful in itself.
