DS2's headmaster said the challenges facing our (molly-coddled) children in living away from home are considerable and we should consider where culturally they would feel most comfortable.
up.
Oh so true. We set a 50 mile exclusion zone to ensure our DD put some distance between us. Unfortunately although she had six good offers two of them were from the Uni 20 miles from home which ranked third after Oxbrdge for her area of interest. We pressed for her to go elsewhere as we felt the life experience was invaluable but it was her choice so she stayed local.0 -
Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Cardiff, UCL to choose from. Staying in halls for all five choices, so she can live independently.
Much to agree with the other parents here. A faraway one = car problems. They're all cities so parking problems loom large.
If it were up to me and all else was equal I'd push for UCL and Cardiff for logistical reasons. But who listens to their old dad?
UCL has a much better rep than the rest of those, in my opinion.
I'm not biased or anything.0 -
i dont think oxbridge is really all that helpful anyway. we've got quite a few oxbridge grads sitting around in paralegal jobs unable to get anywhere career wise. these days you need to have more on your cv than just a load of academic qualifications in order to get into good grad schemes, and the oxbridge people need it just as much as anyone else.0

Did make me realise there is a list that i could probably generate an interest for pretty much any one on ...http://www.forbes.com/billionaires/list/0 -

The trouble I have with any clothes is I need a short/petite range - and they are very few and far between - and infinitely more expensive than regular clothes, so I usually look like a bag lady as most of my stuff is in regular sizes and by the time you get a size 14 top on a short bod you look like the Michelin man, bedraggled and swamped.0 -
Well, I had a look at your list lir and I have to say for the most part they don't float my boat (well not until at least the 40s anyway where there are a couple of ok looking ones). I can only assume that not getting laid gave them plenty of time to concentrate on making money. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

You see, to know a lot about it?PasturesNew wrote: »I don't know if it's still the case (can't see that it would have changed), but at Cambridge you weren't ALLOWED to have a car - even if you kept it well away from the College. So, even if you had a house 2 miles away, with a driveway and everything..... undergrad = no car. I think you also had to live within the sound of the bells of some church (might have been St Mary's? Maybe the one on the Market Square?)
But that was 30 years ago.... I believe some things in the world changed a bit.I think....0 -
