Oh, I wasn't choosing return on those train prices.... returns are £300 from here to there. Mental. You can see why people don't use the trains. Although I'd buy two singles at that price... it'd still be £200.

I haven't really looked at any of these threads, would someone mind summarising what has happened so far by answering the following questions:

    1) What have you mostly been discussing?
    2) Has it all been very nice?
    3) Has there been any beastliness?
    4) If so, what methods have been used against those who were beastly?

    Thankyou.

If you look at Swanage on Google maps .... looks like somebody dug a big earth wall round it hundreds of years ago. Big obvious ridge.... bound to be a historian round these parts that'll point out some huge battle I should have known about :)

That's the Purbeck Ridge. Corfe Castle is on a sort of hump in the only gap in it.

Not really a Battle, but there was a siege there in the Civil War when the local Lord's wife (Matilda?) was in charge while he was off fighting. She did a pretty good job of keeping the Roundheads at bay, till some turncoat let the enemy in at dead of night. There was just a skirmish before the Lady, being very sensible about it, gave in.

I think the enemy were pretty decent about their victory too, so when they kicked Matilda out, they let her keep a lot of her furniture.

Roundhead engineers were left in the village to blow up the castle and render it useless, but being on a government contract, they spun the work out, spent too much time in the pub and made a general nuisance of themselves with the local women. In the end, the villagers gave the engineers a handbagging and sent them on their way, so the job of demolishing the castle was never finished, much to the delight of local gift shoppe owners & the like.

    Here endeth the lesson...:)

Here's train madness. Just looking up whether it's possible for me to get to the new area by train, mid week in 4-5 weeks, for comparison....

By car: £50 return fuel cost. Say £35 return for vehicle wear/tear cost. One way journey time 3 hours.

By train: £108-214. Journey time 8 hours each way.

Mad isn't it. And that's on the mainline. Loads of train changes too.... looks like a straight line on the map :)

Takes DD2 4.5 hours on average to get here from Bournemouth with 3 or 4 changes, depending on how she does it. Even in the big van, I can do it in 3 hours.

Guess which she chooses to use most. :(

    1. Anything and everything, apart from house prices and the economy which we generally discuss on the main part of the board. We've recently been discussing school projects, expensive meals out, job interviews, interior renovation, software, the return of the prodigal son (lemonjelly), that's just in the last day or so. A page or so back, Lydia did a summary for the period before that. Long running themes: smallholdings, like or dislike of mushrooms, families, work, doing stuff in our houses. The mushrooms one is a strange thing, but it is about as polarising as we get round here. Most NPT posters don't like mushrooms at all, but those that do really like them. It's the closest we get round here to a fight:o.

    2. It's always very nice.

    3. There's very little beastliness ever.

    4. When there is, someone steps in and says that's not the purpose of the thread and the issue goes away. It is very civilised.

So welcome Rugged, I hope you stick around. It's just a little oasis of calm where people come together to be civil. When people get to know each other well on here, it just doesn't happen that they go flame each other on other threads, which is a nice unintended consequence.

My moving budget is about £5k as I'll need to be paying up front for rent etc. Moving's not cheap is it.

I wish people on the housing board would remember this.

Do you still have the equity from your house sale available to you?

Yes, I've no problems with cash flow. It's just expensively annoying :)

And the numbers look scarey ....

It IS expensive moving, most people can't do it - even if they save... for many single people it'd take a full-time job and saving EVERY spare penny for about 2 years to accumulate enough to think about moving to another grotty 1-bed flat ... perchance it might be better than the last dire one :)

There does seem to be a hotel/short term let solution available... and at some point I need to hit the agents head on with "will this turn out to be a bail hostel?"

The IBIS hotel near me is being used by our council for emergency accommodation. Only realised this when someone complained to the paper that they were being put up in a hotel rather than given housing immediately.

I got a maxtor bare drive a few months back, open the case, whack it in on the spare sata, boot using the magic cd and you get the option to clone your original hd on to the new one. Takes a while but when finished simply remove old hd, put new one on to primary sata connector and jobs a good un.

I wish I could understand this. I think you mean you opened your machine and copied the hard disk then put it in your new machine, but you could mean something totally different.

We are really poorly connected in the west, even with roads that runn north to south. Still would not want to see 303 become the m303 or worse. M30. My worry here is that both hospitals are on the othersides of congested small cities. Plus the big no go area that would make southern one closer. The big bath hospital i got lost in, its not small is it.
