It's been snowing non stop since 1pm here. Things are pretty white! I've stayed holed up in my bedroom all day, snug. I'd love a glass of fizz, but won't venture out to the shop until it stops, which it doesn't show much sign of. Maybe we can visit the pub when the rugby's over.

    We have snow!

Meant to be going out tonight about 1.5 miles away, not sure whether to walk or drive.

It snowed first, then rained here, but I went out to remove loads of dead and trimmed blackthorn from a field hedge, built a big bonfire & got rid of the lot. If I'd left it till tomorrow the field would have thawed out and I'd have had problems coping with the mud.

The trouble with the 'idyllic' country life is that one still has to work to the boss's timetable; the Boss in this case being Mother Nature. :(

You are brave doing the ex-batts, lir. A friend has just applied for a job with a batts rescue place and I'm praying they get it, as those charities are bound to have a surplus of feed thats up to it's use by date! ;)

    Still peeing down......

Just been outside, peeing down.... but quite warm. Looking online at a live temperature gauge, on a local enthusiast's website, it says it's 9.1 degrees. That's reliable as the guy has a full weather monitoring station set up and transmitting. Westerly wind at 7mph. So even with windchill it's still over 7 degrees out there and quite calm.

We had loft insulation installed 2 winters ago. It doesn't make the house heat up any quicker but it keeps the heat in longer. Considering the previous owners had old loft insulation and single glazing, we've made big improvements, though the solid walls mean no cavity wall insulation so it's not that warm a house.

When I bought my house, some of the walls were filled cavity, and others were single skin brickwork. I'll economise on many things but I do like to be warm - I'm still rebelling against the freezing house of my childhood. So I had the single skin bits insulated - you can get something about the same standard as a filled cavity by putting the insulation board stuff - the kind they put in the cavities of new builds - straight onto the interior walls, and then covering it with plasterboard and skimming it with plaster. Of course, it was a lot more convenient for me because I stayed in my rented house for a few weeks until it had all been done, but I'm very happy with the result.
An old fashioned paraffin heater would do the trick... of course you don't actually have one.

They were dangerous things to have around the house, but we had one in the 1960s in case the fire wasn't lit/or we'd run out of coal/wood/whatever.

You can still buy them (I just Googled and was surprised!).... if you fancy making a trip out to a diy/hardware type of store.... or even an Argos.

They tend to be called "greenhouse heaters" these days.

When I was little, we had one of those in the bathroom. We didn't have central heating, but a lot of the rooms had gas fires. I spent the winters sitting on the floor in front of the various gas fires in the living room, kitchen-breakfast room, my bedroom....

I've just driven home westwards across somewhere in the middle of England. It started snowing just before I set off. Driving conditions weren't great, but I've driven in worse, and it didn't feel scary except on the occasional steep hill.

DS has looked out of his bedroom window and noticed that the vent in the caravan roof appears to be open, and is concerned that it may be letting snow in. It's been on the drive (with nobody going into it) since August, so I suspect that today's snow is probably the least of its problems. I can't find the key anywhere....

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Has anyone bought a small LCD TV lately? We have a portable which is not the main TV but is on the way out and has started making buzzing noises when switched on. Want to buy something for no more than say £150, about 19". I have some ideas of sets that I am interested in but just wondered if anyone had made a similar purchase recently and if so were they happy. Thanks!

I just picked up a random one at Argos, flat panel, for the old's new needs. That was well under that price and just worked fine.

I've no idea what it does, except it's a TV. It was bought as a TV, it has channels and a remote. That's all I know about TVs.

That's a bit of a posh alert... having a bathroom big enough for a paraffin heater. And gas fires in the rooms. We had a coal fire in the living room and a gas fire in the front room that was ONLY to be used on Xmas morning or when a special visitor came (so about 12 times in 25 years).
