Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe for meatloaf which they could share? I have several, mostly American based, which are fine but wondering if anyone has an old fashioned one.
Most of the ones I've made tend to have a tomato based sauce with them but I know hubby prefers it with gravy so any recipes would be appreciated.0 -
This is the recipe I use.
1lb Mince beef
4oz white breadcrumbs
Pinch of mixed herbs (optional)
4oz diced raw bacon
Half a small onion, chopped
Salt and pepper
1 egg, beaten to bind
Bind all ingredients together with the beaten egg.
Line and grease a loaf tin and put the mixture in. Cover with tinfoil.
Bake in a bain marie (roasting tin half full of water) for 1hr -1hr 15 minutes. Fan oven 160c.or equivalent. 180c /gas 4 ?
Can be eaten hot or cold, good in sandwiches and salads as well.
My Mum did a variation of this.
She used 6 or 7 Simmers butter biscuits instead of the breadcrumbs and put the mix in a pyrex bowl then steamed it for about an hour. Both versions are delicious and are eaten very quickly in this house.Fully paid up member of S.A.B.L.E.

excellent, thanks. That will be ideal for starters. I like the idea of the simmers biscuits too:)0

Forgot to say - remember to bash them up into crumbs before you add them to the mix. They`d be a bit hard and lumpy if you don`t.:D Enjoy.Fully paid up member of S.A.B.L.E.

I have wondered about meatloaf for a while. Looking at the recipe and without wishing to seem thick, does it come out like a big loaf-shaped burger which you then slice?0

we like this one

and found the amounts listed made 3 loafs each big enough to feed 4 of us - US portions must be huge!!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
