DWP Recruiting Again - 2012

Yeah I know... That's why I said I was going off topic and kept it short. It was just me venting, I am also tired with the system, but if people don't care to change it then it wont.
I agree with you and understand your need to vent. I do care to change the system but have no idea how and do not see how a layperson such as myself has any ability to do so. I know of many people in our situation: applying for jobs way below their ability, having little money to get by on and genuinely seeking recruitment, and the situation seems not to be getting any better for any of us.
It is extremely irritating to see people on TV moaning that their child benefits are being reduced even though they don't work and have partners who are earning £45k+. In the meantime, I am urgently applying for every job out there simply to pay rent and prevent having to move back in with my parents, to no avail. I have spent many months complaining about the situation and the system and it hasn't progressed my career path at all. It has only served to make me quite depressed and anxious and so I see acceptance as being the only alternative. Anyway, I am going off on a tangent but I wish you well in finding a job and, although I have lost a lot of faith that this will happen, I hope the job situation will improve for all of us eventually.Well said goldilocks...
In terms of myself I graduated in July and was working on a contract basis for 6 months..... During that time Ive applied to a lot of graduate schemes and have come to realise that sometimes such schemes are aimed at the "elite" few although I went to a respected business school as they said.
BT have opened a call centre in my area 17k (22k after 1 year i think) and that's another route Im exploring with the hope of maybe working up to a managerial role in 3/4 years (31k)
I was thinking maybe insurance work in claims handling or something along those line again with the hope of building a career in insurance.
Problem is I geographically immobile and I can't be really spending 6k of my salary living away, trains, washing, food etc... Ideally I would want to save a lot of money and buy property .... Easily said than done!
I agree about the graduate schemes. A close friend applied to Jaguar/ Land Rover in September and has yet to hear back because they received 60,000 applications for 4 positions. They certainly are looking for the cream of the crop. I think your aim to build a career in insurance is a good one and hope you manage to fulfill it. I guess it's all about gettng your foot in the door. My background is in psychology (I know: just about the most common degree subject there is!) so I have diminished my aim from working as a clinical psychologist to working in any capacity where I get to speak to other people, which is why I applied for the EO job. I really don't want to rely on hearing back from this vacancy I've applied for (last time, it took me six months before I got the magical call to say I'm successful. I still remember that day and loved the first few months of work. Now I've come full circle albeit with some experience now since leaving uni but with the same torrid, hopeless cycle of sending off applications. Talking to people face-to-face doesn't seem to work as they make me feel even more small. I guess that's what I get for not being employable enough.
On the graduate scheme thing, I knew one person who got that (out of God knows how many) and he was a straight 1st class student. I didn't bother as my grades were at somewhere closer to the other end of spectrum. :P
Good luck once again to those unfortunate enough to be reading my pathetic story. Keep us updated, nothing new to report from myself although my %tile thing has gone up to 76%. Woohoo.0 -

It can be such a de-moralising process, looking for work. It's essentially trying to sell your own labour and when no-one appears to want to buy it then it feels like a pretty personal rejection. And the current attitude towards the unemployed really doesn't help, even from people who are supposed to be sympathetic - my advisor at the JSP is a pretty judgemental @£%^! for example and I always feel pretty small after meeting with her.
But when you're working hard to secure employment you can't let being out of work erode your self worth. It's a brutally tough market out there and millions of others are in the same boat. You clearly ARE employable - you've gotten this job before and you will have a job again!
Stay strong and keep the faith
p.s. Your %ile thing just went up?? Happy Days:j0 -
I applied in one of the London districts and have been told they had approx 10,000 applications, test pass will rise so only 2000 will go through to sifting (which suggests 80% percentile). Of this 1000 will be selected for interview.
So 20 interviews for each advertised vacancy. Although have heard they planned to recruit more than the advertised 50.
10,000 applications for just one of the districts:eek:
Do you mind disclosing which one?0 -
My percentile has gone up too - I keep checking to see if they have reviewed my competency statements yet (patience has never been my strong point although looks like I'll need it for these positions!).
I'm not holding my breath on this one as there seems to be many applicants who have previously worked, or are currently working, for the DWP in similar roles or with far far more work experience than me.
It will be nice to have some feedback on the applications - many of the other applications I am entering use similar methods now so it would be nice to know how wrong/right I have got it. Does any one know what kind of feedback we can expect or is it simply a grade out of 5 without much guidance to help in the future ?LegalBeagles0 -
