DWP Recruiting Again - 2012

The DWP are idiots. They recruit...get rid...then recruit again. They seem to do this every few years or so. What a waste of time, effort and...above all...money!!! My local Job Centre recruited a couple of years ago...as did Job Centres across the country. Then they got rid of most of them and now they are recruiting again...doh!
I worked there for a while as an EO and was offered a permanent contract. I left though. It's a horrible place to work. It's full of alcoholics...and alot of the customers have drink problems too:beer:
Most of the people who work there are 'institutionalized' and do things because "that's the way they've always been done." There's no willingness to change things. Most of the people I worked with didn't even know how to put together a CV...and they were supposed to be helping the jobless back into work. IT skills are few and far between amongst most staff.
You do have 'flexi-time' though. This means you can get in at 7:30 in the morning, make some toast in the canteen and have a coffee and a natter before 9am...but put it down as 'work.' Do this over four days, saving 90 mins each day...then have most of Friday off.
If you're thinking of working for the DWP, and your life is reasonably happy right now...don't do it...it's one of the most depressing and soul destroying things you'll ever do.0 -
Well I have a dilemma, interviewed for another job back in February with a well known retailer, just had a phone call offering me a assistant manager position. I was their second choice, first choice didn’t work out .Have one week to let them know.
With the DWP interview I scored 7,7,7,8,8 (south wessex region) and would prefer this role over the retail position (money is better too!) So I guess I am just looking for some advice, do I take the retail job and forget the DWP position, continue waiting for the DWP to finally get themselves sorted out, or take the retail job and (fingers crossed I’m successful with the DWP and leave after only a few weeks!) Agghhh!
Any advice welcome0 -
@leamingtonspaceman: Hahaha, can't argue with the points you made there.0

Take the job that's been offered and then leave when DWP give you a start date. You've got nothing to lose.
You've got excellent scores so therefore most definitely you'd be offered a position, but what if DWP decide not to recruit externally and give jobs to internal staff. Also you don't know how many more months this recruitment process will take.
Good Luck in whatever you decide0 -
I have worked in DWP for 32 years and i agree0

leamingtonspaceman: Most of your comments are true ,beware of joining unless you have no option . Remember if the recruitment is such a shambles imagine what it is like working for them . In fairness it hasn't always been so bad ,went down hill when became Jobcentre +0

Interviewed at Swindon but on the location form asked for Swindon, Trowbridge, Chippenham and Devizes
The retail job is low paid but being second choice for them I wont feel as guilty If (fingers crossed I get the DWP position) I have to leave them after training!0 -

I've applied to Frome as that is where I live, where would you be travelling from? Good luck with the new job but fingers crossed for this one!:)0
