This is a Daily Mail article from the 2nd of Jan

I try and keep away from the media because its chief aim generally is to keep people in their drama. It is that which sells news papers and brings people in front of the messages from their advertisers. I often do a search on uplifting topics like this however. You sometimes can find absolute gems

I am exactly the same. I stay away from newspapers, magazines and the news because they are so biased and try to reel you in to the drama. I find the Daily Mail to be particularly bad for this and on the website, even if the story is a positive one, you will often find some very negative comments at the bottom so I just avoid the website altogether. I try to avoid negatively judgemental people as much as possible and the Daily Mail website seems to be swarming with them.

goldilockz, thanks for this thread. I actually bought a book by Dr Mark Williams. this one
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindful-Way-Through-Depression-Unhappiness/dp/1593851286/ref=pd_cp_b_0

ages ago when I was struggling with depression but never read it.
I am really having a very hard time with depression again now, so after reading the thread I have found the book and started to read it. It sounds so simple, but not necessarily easy, if that makes sense. Anyway I have subscribed to the thread and if I see improvement I shall update.

Good luck to everyone who is giving this a try, whatever your reasons.

    Hi Dawning,

Welcome! I also bought Mark Williams' book. It lay on my shelf for months before I decided to sell it on eBay. My depression/ anxiety worsened and, looking at the positive reviews on Amazon, I decided to re-purchase the book. I have done several of the meditations on it and for me, Mark Williams' voice is more relaxing and comforting than any other mindfulness masters! I highly recommend trying out his meditations, particularly the body scan, although you might be better building up to that. I hope you find mindfulness to be really helpful. It has recently been proven to be more successful at treating depression and preventing relapse than SSRIs and psychotherapy. The NHS are planning to slowly introduce it as their primary therapy for depression. I wish you all the best and look forward to reading your future posts! xx

Haha! Yes I do. Being Scottish, I enjoy a nice calming English twang! Very relaxing.

Oh I soooo agree about not reading certain newspapers and Daily Mail is top of that list - it's so provoking - and I don't mean thought provoking - it deliberately aims to wind you up and works with me!

I do like the Femail bit though so maybe I can sneak a look at that online!

Hope first day at work went ok goldilockz. For some reason I starting humming the old Smiths song....hee hee..I was looking for a job and then I found a job, and heaven knows, I'm miserable now. LOL!!! It will be worth it come payday though :T

Exercise DVDs, hmm, I know I've bought some at the car boot sale, but I have zero idea where they are....maybe will have a look tonight when I get home....
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!

    Hi Juliebunny,

I agree with you about the Dailymail. Now I just avoid watching/ reading the news altogether if I can. My mum goes on about me 'knowing what's going on in the world' but the news juts makes me feel sad or helpless, and the reporting makes me angry so I wonder what is the point. I used to like Femail too but they are always commenting on such and such celebrity being too fat and another being too thin, and another taking the dog for a walk and other equally mundane things...so I stopped reading it altogether.

On a happier note, I am really liking my new job, thank you. The commute is quite long but the people are generally friendly and the job seems really interesting. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in and knowing the ropes. :D
