Who else has had some shock unexpected expenses so far this year???

Hope i'm not tempting fate but our unexpected bill is a nice one. We re-homed a cat yesteday so at the weekend we had to get food and other bits in for him and today i've just started insurance. Total - £46. I had to do the insurance as our last two cats didn't have it and both had congenital leg problems which cost £400 a leg to fix (luckily it was only one leg for one cat and two for the other rather than all 4!!).
Great thread...I really need to start saving so we have an emergency fund!
ETA - danah - hope your pooch enjoys being spoilt rotten by you for quite a while longer! We lost our elderly dog last year at 16 and she was gumming away at steak and goodness knows what else right until the end. You can't beat the love of an elderly pooch!0 -
My dishwasher went down in Sept, friend looked & said I need a pump. Checked online & finally brought one for £75 in Dec.
He came to replace & its still not working! DOH!
Alternator type belt broke on car on NYE (stuffed my plans for a cheap night out!) Had to be towed from home, as I got it back but couldnt restart it. Fixed & paid for by emergency fund. Took it out to shops same day & it wouldnt start again! What I thought was a symptom of the belt, turns out to be a problem all of its own! Garage "fixed" problem, but has no idea of cause! Double DOH!
Emergency fund is now none existant!Living debt free, since Sept 08 & Dec 10 :wall:

Oh mines is a cracker and it's completely MY/OUR own fault. Been down in kent visiting relatives since the 28th dec. Booked return train journey going out 28th dec coming back sat 7th.......for some reason me and the other half got it into our heads that the return date was Sunday the 8th. Despite having a text reminder sent to my mobile and having the actual tickets in our possession. Pretty expensive mistake cost us £240 (£120 each) for 2 tickets from London Euston to Glasgow. Couldn't even opt for a cheaper method of travel since we had our dog with us and the train is really the only way to travel conveniently with the dog.
Get home and go to start car next day.....wont start. New battery £45.
My other unexpected expense will be £15 on a bottle of Vodka to drown my sorrows at the above.
Oh BTW just to cap things off we were both ill throughout most of our "holiday"......Happy New Year lol.0 -
Bad news on my dental appointment also - need a root canal and a course of AB's. Total cost....... £304!!!!! *faints*
Only availble dentist in my area is private (I've just moved Down South), and i'm in that much pain I'm gonna have to get it sorted ASAP!
One of my lovely doggins has also appeared at lunchtime with a scratch on his eye, and the beginnings of an infection. Poor sausage has no luck with them (had an op last year to remove a growth). It'll be under the insurance excess to treat (I think), so that'll be about another £60 going. And this is the month of no spare money - typical!!0 -

Kitty - I don't know if you have already had your root canal done, and I don't know where down South you are, but if you are in London and not already registered with a dentist, you can get free care in the dental clinics of Guy's or St Thomas Hospitals. The treatment is all supervised by senior staff, so the care is very good even though it is executed by students. The only downside is that it can a lot than with an experienced dentist. I know it probably won't be for the dentist phobic! http://www.kcl.ac.uk/dentistry/patient/index.aspx0

The gearbox on my car went on my way to work on Weds, had to wait 2 hours for tow truck etc, decided to scrap the car as I know it needs major work for the MOT and its quite old, high mileage etc. Fortunately my sisters partner was selling his car so they brought it down for me to use and sort out payment later. So yesterday, driving to my mums house, the back window suddenly smashed inwards for no reason! Scared the life out of me and my son! £60 excess!!! Such a nightmare and bad luck!!Nov NSD: 8/7 Dec NSD: 1/10Sealed pot member #1443 2011: £106. 2012: £171Ninjakat challenge: Aim to clear two debts by April 2013100 day challenge: No toiletries or magazines 19/100 (3 x fails

I haven't had as yet, but I have a feeling that my car won't make it through it's MOT at the end of this month. I also have a feeling it will be something major - just a feeling but when I've had these feelings before, I've usually been right. Not looking forward to it! Car is 6 years old and not high mileage but it's had a few problems the last year or so.
