  • Dreading our MOT (25th jan) as car makes the most horrendous noises at times. Car tax also due...*sigh*

Re Car Tax - I use the post office card for car tax - I put at least £10 per month on it - more if we can afford it - then when the car tax comes in pay it off with the post office card topped up with cash if necessary. Last car tax only needed £5 extra added

I scraped someone's car in a supermarket carpark, owned up and paid for the cost of fixing that car and my own without using my insurance. Ouch! £643 out of my holiday savings.

Vets bill to remove a lump from foster dogs leg. Yes I know the charity that owns him should pay but due to various circumstances their finances are up the creek and as the vet considers it needs to be removed asap we are stuck with it. Trouble is we are skint at the moment so am rather concerned as to where the money is coming from. Our budget is very tight and as neither of us are fit to work things are difficult. Our main concern though is our beautiful oldie Collie. The money will sort itself out somehow.
  • Just wanted to drop on in and say thanks for the inspiration to fight another day/month !!

My electric direct debit went up an ouch! £14 this month : (
some of the posts have made me realise I'm not alone in the January shock dept so thanks for this thread : )

On a positive note at least I've realised now and can look to do something about it, where as before... I probably wouldn't have even noticed I was that far in non finance cloud cuckoo land!

Cars are no fun sometimes. Tax your car for just 6 months this time and see if you can save a bit and do for 12 months next time, this is what we have done and it makes it six months from the MOT when its due.

However looking at our budgets ours is next due in august and i will only have about 7 months worth saved so Im not sure if I will have that luxuary next time.

I've got my car tax due this month so I too will go for the 6 months. Our boiler has half packed in too.

We do have central heating but no hot water ! so we've been boiling kettles and pans for everything we need hot water for .Nightmare ! Its 15 years old and I think it'll have to be replaced. We're on a dmp and don't have enough in our emergency fund to get it replaced.

Our gas and electricity is now £ 250 a month ! We've only a 3 bedroomed terrace so I'm now looking in to that.I feel as if we're paying for the whole row.!

I'm sure things will improve but heck I don't know when !:eek::eek:

  • Kiwikaz your gas and leccy is way too high!
There must be something you can do to reduce that. Do you know what's made it so high? Is there an error somewhere in the meters or something?
  • What a lot of disiaters we're all having. Glad I'm not alone but really sorry to hear so many horror stories. It doesn't matter whether it's an iron or something major like a boiler. These things all affect us and I hope everyone is able to find ways to deal with them as quickly and chepaly as possible. Thanks to everyone for posting advice here too. It's really helpful!
  • I had to spend £500 on a new washing machine and dryer, £160 on the bloody car to fix it then £140 to tax it (not unexpected though) and yesterday a stone cracked my windscreen on the motorway, so insurance excess too! Damn it!

    :( Trying hard...failing miserably :(

My insurance doesn't cover accidental damage! But I have heard back from the and the worst case scenario is a total write off at around £85. Still more than I want to pay (!) but phew....

In the space of 2 months last year we needed
    a new toilet (£135)
    fridge freezer repairs (£120)
    car repairs (£365)
And I think my washing machine is on its way out
We don't have an emergency fund, but we do have a wedding fund (we're getting married this year), which is severely depleted at the moment.

weddings don't have to be expensive to make them special (ours wasn't), I think I still have some favour boxes (wedding dress shapes) if you'd like them? I'd be happy to send them onto you.
