Cost of Boiler Installation seems OTT

We are going to get a combi put in the loft and have been quoted £2700 from a locally reputable plumber.
We currently have a conventional boiler in the kitchen, the hot tank in the bathroom and two tanks in the attic.
I can't wait to free up the space, as hurrah a new bathroom with loads of extra floorspace
We originally wanted the combi in the attic and a few plumbers pulled their faces, but this one it was his suggestion. He says it will be better in the attic he gave us two option in the quote, one to have the combi in the kitchen where the boiler is currently situated which is a couple of hundred less. So we are going for the attic.
I suggest you get a couple more quotes. If you don't know of any plumbers by reputation locally it's worth if you've got a local forum asking checking those sites out or posing a question there for a plumber, I've found this a really reliable method of tracking down decent and reliable tradesmen.0 -

The guy said it is fairly straightforward as the position in the loft will be directly above the kitchen area.
This price includes wireless thermostat downstairs, power flush and cleaning filter or whatever its called. Also removal of water tank and hot water cylinder.
I think this price sounds a bit OTT. But i have had another chap round who quoted similar. [We are in the south east not too far from watford area.]
Any advice appreciated
Thanks
I had 18ri Worcester 5 years ago installed for £2720 (inc vat 17.5%); and 2 months ago I had powerflush and filter for £825. Does not seem bad price to me."I'll be back."0 -
Of course theres a profit in it - he has a business to run. How much there is for the guy who quoted I have no idea and neither do you. Oh I'm quite calm about things actually thank you - always am. Your post was totally unhelpful to the OP so got what it deserved. Sorry about that if I offended.
Calm down there's a good fella!
There is a good profit in that and you know it.

Nor is it constructive either.Canucklehead wrote: »Speculation on whether a quote is 'fair' by keyboard 'experts' (especially those living in a different part of the UK) is not instructive.

So not for a similar job at all then.

which [STRIKE]will[/STRIKE] may add a [STRIKE]bit[/STRIKE] lot to the price. Corrected it for you.
You are absolutely correct. The very fact that he has already had two prices oin the same ballpark sort of suggests that such is the going rate for his particular jobspec.
Indeed. It's also probable that his job has more work IMO.
Cheers
It would have helped had you said that installation in the loft adds a lot to the price, rather than simply dismissing my post. But I note that someone has said that attic installation added a few hundred to the price. Although we do not know the OP's layout. I had quite a lot of work involved in removing the old system and it is possible his job has less work, we just don't know. The OP should get a third quote. He MIGHT have been unlucky in getting two expensive ones. When I got three quotes, one was very high, two were similar, depends I suppose on the costs, and how much the company wants the work.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
Keystone/Canucklehead - It is unfair to say that people are claiming to be experts, they are simply telling me their experiences which does help me build a picture. That is not to say I am going to expect to get the job for up north prices, I understand there can be big regional differences.
(I have a friend who is a sparky up north and charges half of what they do down here - which stands to reason because his mortgage is half of what they are down here
)
I will of course get another quote and take it from there.
Like most people, I dont want to be ripped off but want to pay a fair price. Obviously plumbers need to make a living and cost of living in different areas vary.
So thanks, experts and keyboard experts
alike, I think I have my answers.
And chill out keystone, we know that you do a skilled job that kids cant do - something tells me you dont feel appreciated

Oh Leif my dear old chap don't be so sensitive. As it happens I was replying to your post which was dismissive of mine first. You'll note that I used the word "may". It may add a bit, it may add a lot, it may not add anything at all.It would have helped had you said that installation in the loft adds a lot to the price, rather than simply dismissing my post.
Indeed they did but that refers to their own circumstances so can't be taken as applicable to this job so we should not take it to be so.But I note that someone has said that attic installation added a few hundred to the price.
Absolutely correct. Nobody posting on this thread has seen it nor do we have a detailed jobspec to consider/compare.Although we do not know the OP's layout. I had quite a lot of work involved in removing the old system and it is possible his job has less work, we just don't know
Agreed. We have both already said that further up the thread. The OP should get a third quote.
That is more common than you may think for various reasons.....and how much the company wants the work.

The poster I had a go at was not helping you one iota by posting idiotic comments which were not based on expoerience rather pure unadulterated guesswork.converted-lurker wrote: »Keystone/Canucklehead - It is unfair to say that people are claiming to be experts, they are simply telling me their experiences which does help me build a picture.
Which is absolutely the right thing to do.I will of course get another quote and take it from there.
Of course you do and thats perfectly reasonable.Like most people, I dont want to be ripped off but want to pay a fair price
I'm well chilled ta. Perhaps I was transmitting on the wrong frequency, your irony filter clearly not being tuned to my transmission. Not your fault - I'll do better in future. And chill out keystone,
Oh not at all - guy asked for a slap and got it. End of conversation. I certainly won't be stalking him to deliver another. Life's too short.something tells me you dont feel appreciated
