Daytime running lights
Comments

My old 1986 Volvo 740 had daytime running lights from new and they were never a problem for anybody except the Spanish.
Why the Spanish? Because the car was never sold in Spain and they thought I had left my side lights on and kept flashing me.
I don't think anyone ever complained about daytime running lights back then, and I don't see why anyone should do so now."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

I think the issue about most complaining now (not about the safety of motorcyclists) but auid/bmw and the alike used them partly for styling and partly for safety and that has got some peoples back ups and maybe , rightly so who knows.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

I've had two 850's, which both had DRL's on them and they just annoyed me because it didn't seem right having lights on in the day. Lights are something that you turn on when it's dark0 -

IIRC when the headlamps are on at any time, not just at night, the DRLs must be dimmed or switched off completely.0 -

But, predominantly this is a money saving website (the clue is i the name), so to spend money on something that is totally unnecessary, goes against the grain.People ask for information and instead of people giving suggestions or advice all they have to offer is irrelevant criticism thats not even related to the subject in hand. Whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion Wig wasn't even talking about the same thing, suggesting I was trying to pimp my car instead of using DRL's for there intended purpose.....
I think the sarcasm really did go over your head. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Or they could ban drivers who need lights on in the day to help them spot a 1.5 ton of metal that is being driven around.:D
I would agree with this in principle. Problem is as DRLs become more common, so more drivers will become reliant on them, the opposite of what you suggest.
I've already experienced similar, had someone follow me into a car park, complain that my car is unsafe because the top brake light isn't working so they couldn't tell when I was slowing down (originally there was another car between the pair of us)
They seemed surprised when I explained that my car is not fitted with a high level brake light, just the 4 by the bumper. At this point I decided I would park in a different car park to protect my paintwork.
The point I'm making though, that person was reliant on that extra light to tell them about my braking rather than on proper driving such as leaving a safe following distance. The same thing will happen with DRLs only it wont be a minor rear-ender that's caused, it'll be someone pulling out from a side road onto a dual carriageway in front of a biker doing 70.poppasmurf_bewdley wrote: »My old 1986 Volvo 740 had daytime running lights from new and they were never a problem for anybody except the Spanish.

The Volvo ones are a lot better IMO. They're bright enough to be seen, have a clear shape and size and don't leave green blobs on your retinas. I'm still not a fan of them because of the biker/pedestrian safety issue.0 -

Exactly, it is where people come to find out how to save money on things they need or want. They shouldn't have to justify why they want it.
Most of us own things that we acquired simply because we wanted them.0 -
proper DRL units like the hellas need 3 wires to work properly, ground, an ignition switched feed (I tap off the fuel pump feed at the fusebox and add a 1a fuse so that they are only on while the engine is actually running, not just the ignition on) and a connection to the sidelights so the dim drastically when you turn the lights on because its dark. Always fit a fuse rated below the current rating of the wires. Use loom binding tape, spiral wrap, heatshrink sleeving or convoluted tubing to protect the wires from chafing or damage that could cause a short, use proper fixings such as cable ties to secure the wiring so it cant work its way somewhere it shouldn't go and route it away from hot exhausts spinning pulleys etc.
although tbh you probably would have got more friendly useful advice from pretty much most other motoring forums than this one, I dont know why I bother checking here anymore its just full of folk who want to dive off on a tangent at any opportunity trolling just to start an argument. It would be interesting to see if they are the same IRL and if so how often they go about with a black eye.
For the record I'm also a cyclist and a biker for decades and I have no objection to DRLs on cars, stop generalising. Everything in life shouldn't be catered to the lowest common denominator.0 -

If you look at my posts again Lum you will see my point is exactly the same as yours, that people will rely on them and look for the light rather than looking properly."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

correct but many people with these ignore that. the audi/bmw/citroen ones dont dim nor turn off at dipped/sidelight activation either their manually turned off but for people wanting to look posh keep them on vehicle built after feb 2011 supposed to have a switching relay in them so when the lights are activated they turn off automatically..
many people still drive about in the dark with them on wich they are not supposed to do they do dazzle others expecially with vehicle fitted with the HID dipped beam lamps.0
