Pros and cons of daytime running lamps Rubenoff
we have had DRL for years but have not solved all the problems
of fog lamp abuse in clear weather
DRLs are not to stop fog light use or to be used in replacement of fog lights so its not relevant.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
There are a number of vehicles that use D.R.L. lamps as D.R.L. in Daytime and in the night time these lamps stay lit and they are called auxillary or Fog lamps and cannot be shut off by the operator
our 2005 Ford freestar had 2 located in the front Bumper and Ford told me They were auxillary lights
yet in B.C any auxillary driving lamps must be tied to High beam and not lit on low beam
we pulled out the bulbs due to oncoming motorist flashing their light.s at us in night time
Yet the same unit had D.R.L built into the low beam circuit like our 2007 Ford Focus its just overkill for sales and unknown vehicle regulations not constant across north america

Personally i'm all for DRL's, I have them fitted as aftermarket to both my car and van, as has been said no one ever complained about volvos having their side lights / drl's on back in years gone.
I have since I had a head on smash some 20 years ago always driven with my head lights on, have I been flashed at ? .... nope not once. Id rather be seen than have another full on collision. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
Good morning we have D.R.L. on our R.V. and small station wagon
having spent 35 years with the management of a Highway ministry fleet, we installed the first D.R.L kits on 2000 Vehices in the 1980 era
yes they are a accident prevention tool, Its just the folks that don't shut off their fog lamps in clear weather that cause complaint here
have a nice week ahead0 -
Fitting DRL's to cars which don't have them is silly. I saw a banged up old Peugeot 106 a while ago with Audi R8 style DRL's. It looked ridiculous and I don't know how people can drive such sheds without being embarrassed.
They have been a legal requirement in countries like Finland for absolutely ages. Most manufacturers just wired the cars up so that the headlights are on all the time when the ignition is on.0 -

I respect your opinion and I wouldn't want to own a Peugeot 106, but ...
... DRL's are one new legal requirement, and aftermarket "fad", that I can see the underlying logic behind. Front lights, switched on automatically whenever the ignition is turned on, may help all the other drivers on the road (except for those on this forum and especially this thread, of course) see another car and not connect with it.
I also find it mildly amusing that the so-called boy racers are making their cars potentially safer as a result of jumping on this styling bandwagon.
I am a self-confessed old boy racer, motorsport competitor and petrolhead. I have fitted aftermarket high-level brake lights and front & rear foglights to previous cars. If and when I can find some big white LEDs that will fit into the false grilles alongside my front foglights, I could be tempted. Before anyone says, that location is well within the legal limits, both horizontally and vertically. And they will be wired up legally.
I think that what I have in mind is not unstylish. If anyone else doesn't think so, I repect their opinion. However, I also hope that they will respect the fact that it's my car.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
No problem with D.R.L. installations that operate in the low beam circuit. It seems when additional lamps
are installed to operate the D.R.L system. That these added lamps should extinguish when head lamps are switched on Fog lamps are usually mounted low with thinner beams to try to look under the fog
when fog lamps are selected low or high beam should be not available so the fog lamps operate without
the added Light coming from a higher locations, allowing light to spatter back towards the driver and defeating the original purpose of the lower mounted fog lamps with thinner beam design
Our ford Focus has a fog lamp switch that allows fog lamps alone But the D.R.L still operates in the low beam of the headlamps which cannot be switched off due to the federal regulations asking for D.R.L. so we cannot have fog lamps alone unless a modification is performed to meet provincial regulations that allow fog lamps or low beam to be used ( but Not Both implied)
there is a requirement when fog lamps are used that tail lamps and marker lamps be lit at the same time
any thought on these comment which are the writers?0 -

I say live and let live. They don't do anyone else any harm and there are a lot worse things than retrofitted DRLs on our roads. They have been a legal requirement in countries like Finland for absolutely ages. Most manufacturers just wired the cars up so that the headlights are on all the time when the ignition is on.
Technology and emissions regulations have moved on. LED's use ten times less fuel than incandescent headlamp bulbs.0
