Wiring DIY DRL's legally isn't rocket science. For the record (and any traffic police officers), they need to switch automatically with the ignition, but also switch off when the car's normal lights (ie. sidelights and headlights) are in operation (ie. at night).
Firstly, take their power from an "ignition on" circuit.
Secondly, connect this through the "normally on" contact of a "double throw" (one with 5 terminals) relay. Connect the coil to the sidelight circuit. When you switch the sidelights on, the relay operates, and the DRLs are switched off.
Simples, as they say in Meerkovo.
I have a circuit diagram, when I can figure out how to post or link to it. Now, that's difficult.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
DRL's, what's the point?
It's like saying "I wish I was driving a better car, but I can't afford it, so i've fitted these crappy LED strips instead".
I bought a set of DRL lamps, one is fitted inside my boot (the standard boot lamp is crap), one has had it's LEDs ripped out and replaced with IR LEDs, to create night vision for my onboard camera.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Firstly, I admit to playing "devil's advocate" here, with all the lights and gadgets I've fitted to my cars over the years.

Yes, it is. Just insert the aftermarket accessory of your choice.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

IIRC they don't have turn completely off when the sidelights are on. Dimming is acceptable too, although harder to achieve if you are doing a DIY retrofit.0 -

Actually you'd just use the same setup mentioned, but utilise the NO contacts on the relay with a power resistor to feed the DRL's..... So the NC contact is when your sidelights are off = DRL full power, the NC (+ Resistor) contact for when they're on = DRL half power
Effectively when powered up the relay will switch the resistor into the circuit.
NC= Normally Closed
NO= Normally Open
It'd work.... BUT, the correct way to do the job with LEDs is not to control the voltage/current, but to use pulse width modulation..... In which case you'd want to be switching in/out the timing capacitors of some sort of 555 based timer circuit, with the LEDs being driven from it's output via something like a TIP121 darlington transistor.
The car manufacturers though, they would probably use a lighting control module to run every light on the car, ultimately controlled by the ECU.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

The guy is clearly using canned posts and has no idea what this forum is actually about or what country it represents.
Notice the use of the word "citation" and his suggestion that Police should be able to issue tickets for misusing foglights.
1) "citation" is the American term for an NIP.
2) UK Police can already issue NIPs for foglight misuse.0 -
