I'm making:
- table decorations
- orders of service (from a kit i picked up in The works for £5)
- Place names
-Table numbers
-Table plans
Then one of my bridesmaids is making my guestbook and one is doing the flowers. I've got a friend making my cake.
Was going to make my invites, but I don't think I can make them that much cheaper than Vistaprint - so think i'll prob just use them. Wondering whether to make RSVP cards to go with them though.0 -
Oh and to those who've said they're making their veils, how hard is it?? And worth the saving?0

The first lot of my invites turned up from vista print today :j

These were what I was originally going to make but changed my mind after reading sugarwalsh's thread which gave me the idea of using a poem on our invites and Nickki44 who posted the poem I used.
I was originally going to change the rose mount on my handmade ones to the poem but the text was too small to read so I scraped that idea and went with vista print. I also made RSVP cards, evening invites and a flyer for our post box but these haven't been delivered yet.0 -
Love the poem:D & the invites too.Married the man of my dreams - 10th September 2012, St Paul's Bay Lindos :jIt was amazing.

Just been talking cakes with OH and nana and told them i was considering buying either tescos or marks and spencers fruit cakes to make a two tier cake and them use M&S sponge cutting bars for the rest. They have managed to talk me into trying to make my own fruit cakes for the wedding. I guess I have 18 months to practice and learn the fine art of icing but does anyone have any fruit cake making and icing advice? I can bake sponge cakes but never done a fruit cake and never tried to royal ice a cake.0

My advice (also making my own fruit cake) is to use good quality ingredients, make sure you practice! I do find fruit cakes easy enough to make, just soak the fruit for about a month, so the fruit is around the same weight/ consistency as the mixture so it doesnt sink.
I would also recommend using sugar paste from squires kitchen, and their marzipan. Buy a squires cake magazine, I brought their sugar crafts one and it is really helpful. The wedding cakes one seemed to be mostly pictures, which is good if you don't know what you want, but I did!:T0 -
I will hve a look for the magazines thank you. If I make a two tier cake can I just sit them on top of each other? Or will I need some sort of support for them?0

Lisa Jane, I use Nigel slaters Christmas cake for fruit sponge, it is amazing. Packed full of fruit. If you are stacking them you need fruit at bottom. You need boards and to make it really stable use rods in lower cake to balance next tier. You will find it easier to ice if you marzipan both cakes. I just use shop bought. You will also need a dense sponge so it slices well. If you can get hold of a cake stand you may find that easier than stacking them. Hope that helps. MeganMay GC - £100 per week

Thank you both for your advice, I shall take note of what you have both said.
After talking with OH and looking at wedding cake pictures we decided we like the two tier angled cakes similar to this http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U56yhynHDXY/TFp7hLUMaSI/AAAAAAAAB2A/vQ5y6HDW6II/s320/square-sunflower-cake.jpg
My Nana makes Christmas cakes and said she'll assist me, which generally means she'll no doubt take over the making of them. I guess I'll start collecting the bits I need and then have a few trials. Good job the guys at work like fruit cake because they may be getting it a few times over then next year and a half :rotfl:0 -
