Yes - much the same. Other than Windows, other programs and applications need to be kept up to date to help with the security of your computer. In particular, vulnerable versions of Java, Adobe Flash & Reader (amongst others) are targeted for exploitation to aid the download & installation of malware.
Stick with the other stuff first so as not to give you too much to do at one time & confuse matters, and then visit Secunia's OSI to check for other vulnerable software.

Rapport is in the currently installed programmes but I get this message when I try to remove it. i'm sure I did this yest cos followed a link for it "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed"0

Also, my list in the add/remove programmes only has the following windows entries compared to the long list that appeared from the Uninstall list on hijackthis:
Windows internet explorer 8
Windows live essentials
Windows live sign-in assistant
Windows live sync
Windows live upload tool
Windows media format 11 runtime
Windows player 11
Windows resource kit tools
Windows xp service pack 3
Can't see windows defender. Confused??0 -
windows defender updates was in the list above, it may have gone if you have subsequently uninstalled mse, don't know what is there really without a hijackthis log.!!
