    That was already unticked.

That's what I've got except that the bypass proxy server for local addresses is ticked but greyed out so I can't access it

Sorry I really have to leave it for now. It must be as frustrating for you knowing what you know & trying to convey it to me who knows nothing! Thanks for trying - I'll get there! Goodnight

That's not a problem. It means you have the Proxy Server disabled.

If you want to untick the Bypass proxy server for local addresses just to be sure, temporarily tick the Use Proxy Server for your LAN, untick the Bypass proxy server for local addresses box and then untick the Use Proxy Server for your LAN box.

Well switched on fine this morning but couldn't get online initially. This has been a periodic problem that usually clears itself when I try the 'diagnose connection'. Just painfully slow loading each page - thank goodness for my ipad or I wouldn't be here now! My plan was to try to load Avast again, the run CCleaner & take it from there. I assume I get rid of everything CCleaner suggests? I' m probably sounding really stupid on this thread but it's one of those things that's easy when you know how - and if I don't ask I'll never learn?

is your internet always that slow?? If you have unticked the proxy server boxes as instructed, what speed do you get from https://www.speedtest.net ?? Are you a long way from the exchange? is it broadband or a dial-up connection??

Increasingly so, hence me doing this. Just got the furthest so far downloading Avast but it seems to have stuck on 84% & I suspect I may get timed out - again :-(.

I have broadband. By exchange do you mean where the phone socket and router are? Sorry I'm not good on terminology. They are in another room and I believe the cables run outside the house and back in. Set up by my ex so not really sure.

The PC does seem to keep dropping connection but regaining fairly quickly. We also run my ipad, 2 lap tops & a couple of smart phones using wifi with less problems. I'll look at the speed later, I don't want to interupt atm on the off chance it'll complete it's download. Ever hopeful.
