When i go into the cubicle it's for a sit down. So i'll wipe the seat with loo roll to make sure it's clean, then I flush the loo (loo roll on the flush and then throw it in the pan) to make sure it's going to flush when I need it to. Then I hope and pray that the seat is cold when I sit down. When i've wiped I'll pee on the flush and the door handle so i only get my sterile wee on my hands, perfect.
Then you wash your hands in the sink, go back into a cubical opening the door with your feet (not the same one obviously, as it will have a wet floor), get some more paper and open the main toilet door with it.

Then when you get home, sterilise your shoes, or leave them outside the house. Then you remember that feacal matter gets on everything when you flush, so wash all your clothes and have a quiet mental breakdown.

When my Mum was having chemo I went round every morning to clean all her door handles, light switches, taps and the toilet flush and toilet with anti-bacterial stuff.

So did I! The consultant terrified me! I used to slather the stuff on anyone who came into contact with her, and clean it all again once they left!
  • This thread is very interesting to me. I am obsessive about cleanliness and need help with that but think that some of the things I do may not be very commonly done but are not obsessive.

I try not to use public toilets but sometimes need to visit if my elder one is accompanying me and needs to use the toilet. I use a tissue paper to open and close the doors (at first, I did it discreetly but now I don't care who is looking and thinking I'm weird!). The number of people coming out of the toilets and not cleaning their hands is shocking and I find it very stressful as then I keep thinking about them going out and touching various public areas, which I might be touching as well. However, I do not in the least worry about germs as I believe there is no escaping these as lot of these are air-borne and all. My concern and worry is about the dirtiness and I find the human or animal faecal matter very dirty and like to clean my hands with soap after touching anywhere in the toilets.

All my family members take their shoes off in the hall and do not ever take these further because of this reason as I feel we walk over a lot of such things when outside (dog poo cycled and walked over and bits all over the place - people walk over these and then take the same shoes in to the house and I find that very dirty personally).

I realise I am quite obsessive about these things but surely even the people who do not obsess about it would not want bits of dog poop brought on to their floors or carpets with their shoes. Similarly, you would not want to touch a toilet flush touched by some else with dirty hands and not wash your hands. I just wonder about this at times and am yet to understand the difference in people's approach to this issue, so will be reading this thread with interest.

Not ideally, but its not the end of the world if it does happen and you just clean it up and get on with your day!

If you're not afraid of disease caused by germs then I don't understand why dirt bothers you, what harm do you think its going to do?

Very sensible, you've obviously had survival training ;)

I do think that your reaction is more than somewhat obsessive!

If someone brings something in on their shoes then so what, it will clean.

I am yet to find an answer to that. I just feel it is dirty and always take extra care to avoid any such mess. Why I feel so excessively about it is beyond me and I would very much like to know why I get so stressed about it all but sadly have not been able to come up with any explanation. I was not always this bad but the thoughts have become worse in last few years.

Nah, I'm just too lazy to go to the bathroom. I only use a bag because I've got a wire waste paper bin and it dribbles onto the lounge floor if I don't :D

How will it clean? Vaccum cleaning does not clean thoroughly and how many times in a day would one clean the floor. Also, I find cleaning such mess very stressful. My DC1 got it on her shoes once and I was not able to look at it while cleaning. I tried and then just binned her shoes. Not very MSE but I do feel very strongly about it.

And, you are right. I am extremely obsessive and should seek help as it makes day to day living very stressful but I was wondering about the people not feeling the need to clean hands after touching dirty toilet flush.
