Hi, I keep forgetting this thread exists, I only managed to keep up with posts for 2 days! But the ladies on the facebook group recommended I post on here as they think some of you have babies with reflux. I'm trying to decide if Izzy has it or not and I can't get a doctor's appointment until next week.

Since she has been taking bigger feeds she has become increasingly sick after feeding, and struggles to settle. I've tried making her go back to smaller feeds and more often, but now she's getting bigger she is too hungry and it doesn't work. She also grunts and groans for hours before she poops, and when she does poop it comes out runnier than it used to (not diarrhoea, just looser than it used to be). Oh, and she has a very windy bottom, blows off all day long.

A friend suggested it might be reflux, but I don't know. I wondered if anyone had any experience and thinks it sounds likely or not?

I'm considering just trying her on a different brand of formula in case the formula doesn't agree with her, but I don't want to change it if it'll make no difference anyway.

  • Aiden suffered with acid reflux, he still takes medication in his milk as it hasn't completely gone yet.

He was about 4 weeks old, and displayed symptoms very similar to your LO. Although Aiden also suffered badly with colic, so I could never differentiate what exactly was giving him the symptoms. The obvious one for us was the sick, he used to throw up after every bottle, and it wasn't just a mouthful or two, it was either a little bit of sick but constantly until the whole bottle was up or it was the whole bottle all at once.

As Aiden had colic it was always hard to get his wind up anyway, but when he did get some wind it was always followed by him being sick.

My doctor was really understanding and prescribed us Gaviscon firstly, advising us that if this didn't work we could move on to something else. Luckily for us Gaviscon was a winner and within a few days he was much better. If I ever forget to put it in his bottle or don't have it with me I definatelty notice a difference - although he does seem to be improving and I have been told he will grow out of it soon.

I know for a lot of people Gaviscon doesn't work, and a lot of people dismiss it, however, it definately helped us so I would say keep an open mind if you are offered any medication and try it, as every baby is different.

If you are concerned can you speak to your HV? Mine was really helpful and has been since we were prescribed Gaviscon.

One final thing, I did change Aidens formula from SMA Gold to Cow and Gate. Only because I found on the internet that some babies struggled with colic and consitpation from SMA, however I know a lot of our friends have used SMA with no problems so this may be coincidence.

Thanks for the info sunshine. Izzy will be five weeks tomorrow, so it seems she has started to show the symptoms at the same age your little one did. She doesn't throw up all in one usually, she does the little bit constantly coming out, although at a guess I think we only have half a bottle coming back, so it doesn't sound as bad.

I'll wait and see if the GP offers anything, hopefully he'll be clued up. It's not someone I've seen before, so I don't know what he'll be like. It's good to know that the medication has worked for you and Aiden is doing well.

My HV is on holiday, but I've been told I can call tomorrow after 10am and talk to someone else.

Bubba is actually on Cow and Gate at the moment. I think I'll wait until I've spoken to someone tomorrow before swapping formulas as I don't want to upset her further.
