I thought it was to do with babies preferring to sleep a certain way and the mattress moulding into there shape? Either way I'll probably buy new one anyway, by the time my monster is done with it, it'l more than likely be ready for the scrap heap!
Routines, depends what you mean, a loose bedtime routine, like bath, pj's, boob, could be done from now. A proper, feed at 8/10/12, nap at 2/4/6 etc, could be difficult. We FF and didn't get into a proper routine until he was about 11/12 weeks, but that suited us xThe frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
Turtlemoose - we have only been in a routine for about 4 weeks and hes 17wks sunday. Aiden had bad colic and slight reflux and was so difficult to settle at first.
To be honest he just set his own routine really and we just went with that. He goes to bed after his bath at830 last feed about 10 and wakes at 4 then.730. He naps about 930 for 45mins and again about 200 for an hour or two. Theres still days where he just doesnt do that though!! I think it all depends on your baby xxxxLittle Man born 11 March 2012 :smileyhea

God we don't even have a routine like that  The only thing I know for certain is he goes to bed at 7, he gets up any time between 8 and 10 :rotfl: Again his naps are sporadic, one 2-3 hour nap and one 1 hour nap, but they can be morning or afternoon and at any time. He is a sod thoughThe frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

I do Gilly, he can have my bed and I'll sleep on it, it's lovely
To be honest mattresses are cheap enough for me to buy new even if I had the old one still. I don't mind secondhand clothes and so on, but I won't scrimp on mattresses and car seats.
My life is too unstructured for a routine, we'd just end up breaking it all the time. Tonight his big bro has a lesson, then we have a 3 hour drive to do. If I'd got a nice bedtime routine, we'd be in trouble!
Yawn, George says he doesn't need sleep, anyway.0 -
I have to go out today too, hoping to grab a quick shower while he has his nap. About to get his porridge and then I'll put him down. We need more porridge, I swear this boy goes through a box of baby porridge in 3 or 4 days  No Mummy I don't like milk, but food, I'll eat you out of house and home!!The frontier is never somewhere else. Sigh, all these babies that sleep! He went to bed at 1, up at 4 and never really back to sleep, and napped just long enough for me to get to the loo.
He's always like this when I have a long drive, is he psychic?

I swear they are btw, if I have to go out anywhere, I'll sometimes put Aaron in his cot while I'm getting ready because it's the only place he's safe nowadays, and I'll come through and he's snoozing! Happened 3 times last week.
When I want him to snooze? Yeah, dream on.The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
turtlemoose wrote: »gilly you don't have to buy a new mattress for baby 2....the whole cot death risk from second hand mattresses is about other peoples second hand mattresses. If you Google it, its about bacteria etc from puke/pee/poo seeping in to the mattress and not being cleaned properly, and also about it not being stored somewhere clean and dry, so bacteria can grow. I read that basically if you look after your own mattress and keep it clean and dry, there's no reason not to reuse it.
I'll try and find the link later, but not now as demand feeding is exhausting and I'm going to sleep as soon as reuben does!
Can we talk routines ladies?....at what age did you implement routines? OH thinks we should start now (1 month). I think if we were FF that would maybe be possible, but as we are doing on demand BF (and he has hourly cluster feeds at some point every day!), I don't really see how I can enforce a routine just yet. Would be interesting to see what your opinions are and how things worked for you all?
I have a very relaxed routine based on the E.A.SY (Eat, activity, and sleep) in reality its more like eat, activity, snooze, activity, snooze eat
at the moment he's reversing it a bit so he will have less activity after his food and more after his sleep. i think it just helps establish a pattern and isn't too rigid so yu ahve some idea of what to expect. when we started it he was really young so the activity was sometime just a nappy change before he went off to sleep. I'm not to good at sticking to routines so this was nice as it is a relaxed one.
I do find it handy to do a little tick chart everynow and again for a week - just of feeds and sleep as It helped me realise that he did have a pattern of naps...loosley around the same times every day0 -
Thanks everyone
I have noticed a pattern - a feed that lasts longer than 10 minutes(in one go) will lead to a sleep of 3 to 4 hours - he does that twice in any given 24 hrs, and they ualways run next to each other. After the big sleeps is 2 hrly (ish), and after a while of that I either have hourly or if he's grouchy is non stop as every time I change him, out him down etc 5mins later he's asking for more, but then will only have 2 mins...snooze...put down....wake and shout for more etc! And awake time is usually 2 to 4 small sessions (hour or so) and one big session (3-4hrs).
Only trouble is this pattern rotates, so sometimes his two long sleeps are overnight (bliss!) but sometimes they aren't, which is the killer!! My health visitor bleats on about going to some groups, but at the mo I just can't see how I can commit to being in X place at X time on X day because we might be on a long sleep then and mummy needs to sleep during those times!!
I guess as he (and his tummy) gets bigger then he can eat more in a sitting and sleep longer??
I like the chart idea seren, as a starting point, might be able to spot something consistent each day and can build from that.
Thanks everyone
Wish we had some sun, it's tipping it down here and we had planned on a walk round the park (I really want rid of my jiggly belly:( )0
