Just wanting some advice, i posted a while ago asking how much bottle fed babies were taking, Ava (4.5 weeks) is just feeding all the time. We've asked the HV previously and been told NOT to change her formula and NOT to give her hungry baby but i'm beginning to wonder about both.
She's currently on SMA 1st feed and seems to get terrible pains in her stomach and terrible wind from the bottom end. It's a constant every day and sometimes she's screaming. She has one poo a day so isn't constipated but seems in a lot of pain, it's quite upsetting to watch. I know a lot of people have had problems with SMA as apparently it's harder for baby to digest. Just wondering if anyone had a similar problem and changed formula with positive results?
As said above she's also constantly hungry, today she fed at 2am, 4am, 6am (not sure of amounts as DH did night feeds)9:30 5oz, 12 5oz, 4:30 5oz (slept a lot as we were in the car) 5:30 3oz and 7:30 4oz this just seems like a lot to me. According to HV her weight is going up fine and she's following the 75 percentile line on the graph but i'm not sure if eating a lot is adding to her painful tummy.
Any advice, experience would be greatly appreciated. We're going to get her weighed tomorrow so can speak to the HV again, no doubt they will label me a neurotic motherMight sound like a wimp but as DH is at work my mum is coming with me as i sometimes feel like i'm being fobbed off.
DP, i cant advise on formula as i'm BF, but please dont ever worry about coming off as a neurotic mother. We have instincts for a reason, and if yours are telling you something isnt quite right, then please do follow them. If i had let people tell me i was just neurotic or over fussing, we would never have had LO's tongue tie or reflux that i spotted both of, diagnosed and treated.
It sounds like something is definately not quite right, so i hope someone comes along who has some thoughts on FF. Have you joined the FB group yet? If not, maybe worth doing so, as there are lots of ladies with experience on there who can advise who arent on here much. Email Gillyx or Mirrorimage0 to join.

Hi Darkphaery. I used to use SMA with my first baby but changed to Aptamil. It's the closest to breastmilk apparently and none of my 3 babies have had any problems with it. With regard to hungry baby milk, my baby has just gone onto it and he's 22 weeks. If you are on FB, please come and join our group. Myself, Gilly and Mirrorimage are admins so PM one of us and we can send you the link. Some like myself don't really post on here anymore but are constantly on FB! xThank you to everyone for sharing competitions!0

Hello Darkphaery, I had a similar problem but my LO wasn't taking as much at each feed, but I finally figured out (lightbulb moment) I was feeding sometimes and he wasn't hungry but tired! Not sure if that'l be the same for you though if she is taking 5oz. Does she drain the bottle? Would it be possible to put more oz in each feed or is 5oz the most she'l take?
My boy is 10 weeks and takes about 4/5oz every 4 hours during the day. Ava is still really little though, and my Aaron was feeding about every 2/2.5 hours at her age. There tummys really are teeny tiny when first born and according to my book it can take until about 8 weeks to get a proper pattern going with some babies, up until 12 with some.
If she has bad wind etc I'd recommend trying colief, it's not cheap but it helped here, and if it does you can get it on prescription. You need to follow the instructions though and its a bit of a faff. 30 minutes its to sit in the feed if making up fresh or at least 4 hours before if making up in advance (feeds only keep for 12 hours in the fridge after putting it in too)
What you could try would be Comfort milk? I'm not sure what it's called with SMA but with Aptamil we used the "comfort" brand. It basically breaks down the milk a lot more so it's easier to digest. It does make babies poo green and stink though but it does seem to work.
I wouldn't listen to your H/V about not changing milk, if you feel it would help you could give it a goafter all if you don't try you'l never know. I have heard a lot of bad things about SMA Gold though, all similar stories too.
I don't think it would be lactose intollerance really, but someone else better in the know could come along and tell you different xx
Edit: If you are having problems with digestion etc I wouldn't use hungry baby until you get it sorted, because sometimes it can make it worse. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
You could also try Infacol? Worked a treat for DS3Thank you to everyone for sharing competitions!0

I started Ben on aptimel first stage milk, then we moved to hungry baby milk and both had the same reactions you had with the tummy pain and horrible smelling wind. I'm not kidding when I say it was bad enough to clear the room at times. What helped us was changing to comfort milk for colic and constipation and using gripe water before a feed to ensure we get all wind up. I changed his milk to comfort when he was about 8 weeks old and I wish I'd done it sooner as he was such a happy baby after that. He is almost 4 months and is thriving on it!0 -
Welcome Icey77
- Do you wake your babies to feed them or do you let them sleep as long or short as they want then feed when they wake? I agree with what the others have said, wake them if its any longer than 4hrs. If you are bf then I'd recommend finding a bf counselor in your area just in case you need any help.
- When in the day do you bath your baby? Do you bath them when they are grizzly or only when calm? We have only ever bathed our lo once a week so picked times when he was happy.
- Have you bathed them with you? If so, do you just deal with the cooler water that is needed to suit them? My DH bathes with lo as I can't stand the colder water
We also introduced the shower early.

Hello all x
Been busy... :EasterBun
Agree with others re not letting LO go too long without feeding
Not answering the question but thought id mention We both bath and shower LO but do not do it too much to avoid drying out skin. We did not use any bath stuff as friend advised plain water best to start with as their skin is still maturing. We found this
http://www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/3768569/Trail/searchtext%3EBABY+BATH.htm great for showering (it would sit in a normal bath but too big to stand in my baby bath)as they don't slide as much in it and it's warm to touch with padded head rest rather than cold plastic. It does sometimes go down in price and there is a pink version. )I got mine second hand for a £1!!! And it's been great) I also use it now he is bigger to sit in on bathroom floor whilst I am having a shower sometimes.
Nice to see some fb ladies posting a bit glad u are all well. Gilly piccie great. Lovecrafting congrats and we'll done!!
Need to take the newborn clothes out of the wardrobe but don't want to
LO has second set of imms due Friday
Crabapple it is weird when you leave them but you know they are fine and they get more cuddles when you come home. Most of the time when I leave LO he is with hubby so it does not worry me as he is used to looking after him

My DD was Jan 14th and she's still in the moses basket and I don't intend to move her for a little while yet. There's room, although nowhere near as much as when she was first in it
Darkphaery - I know a couple of people who have used SMA and both ended up switching. If LO seems to be struggling with it it seems sensible to try a different one and see what happens. Don't let the HV fob you off that everything is fine either, they really only seem to look at the graphs and weight gain isn't the only indication of a happy baby or a happy mummy!
We've got a plastic seat for in the big bath and LO seems very happy with it. However, we put a towel on it first so she doesn't sit on the cold and slidy plastic. Last night she had a bath and was the best yet - sat happily in the bath, enjoyed it when daddy helped her splash her legs and didn't complain while we cleaned her down and washed her hair (treating a bit of cradle cap). She only got upset when we got her out.
And for the first time ever she slept for 8 hours solid:j. I did have to check she was alright when I woke up. Better still, although I did wake up a couple of times I didn't get up either - the longest I have been without needing a wee for a very very long time!
