    Morning All

I've only just managed to put the boy down and creep over here for a quick look online - I have a bit of a cold but am trying not to sniff incase he wakes up haha!!

Does anyone have a baby with a reflux? I am not sure if mine has one or not really. He isnt sick after every single bottle, but sometimes he can be projectile sick (probably once in the last week he has done that) sometimes its a couple of mouthfulls and sometimes it can be about half of his feed. He is on cow and gate infant milk 1. I thought a reflux was sick every time etc? Any advice from any wise ones?

    Thanks xxx

Hello Sunshine, this is just a quick one as I'm supposed to be getting ready and OH is bugging me, had to bring the laptop into the bathroom on the sly to reply.

My LO suffers from silent reflux (i.e the acid and sick comes up but not out if that makes sense) What I will say is just because it doesn't happen every feed doesn't mean it isn't reflux. Things I'd advise you to do is keep your boy upright for about 20 minutes or so after every feed to let gravity do it's work. You can also prop his pram/moses basket/crib mattress up, with some rolled up muslins/blankets, just so his head is kept higher than his body, this will also help his feeds stay down.

Before you go to your GP's I'd advise SMA Staydown formula, we were told to try it, it didn't work for us, but it may work for you, as it doesn't sound too severe. It is prepared differently from normal formulas (i.e with cold water rather than hot) and isn't available to buy in cartons so you'd have to buy the tub :(

If that doesn't work then I'd go to your GP, they will probably prescribe Infant Gaviscon to start with, and my experience of it wasn't great. I have been using an thickener for his milk called Carobel (it's made by Cow & Gate but is available on prescription) and it's been fab for us, it thickens the milk up so it isn't able to come back up. You do have to use very fast flowing teats with it though so baby isn't sucking and nothing coming out. Apparently it's not routinely prescribed anymore, but I'd have a go at asking for it, as I think it's been great. We're also on anti acid meds but that's another story. There is also another drug Domperidone, if none of that worked, which basically pushes the milk through his body faster and is supposed to be great. There is another member on here Doglover I'm sure if you'd pm'd her she'd be happy to answer any of your questions. I think her LO had the same type of reflux you describe whereas I don't have a lot of experience with sick.

Do not let the GP fob you off with "oh he's gaining and seems happy enough" because it's not exactly nice dealing with all that sick and you shouldn't have to if it can be treated.

Thanks so much Gilly, thats great advice. We changed his milk from SMA Gold about 12 days ago as his poos were really hard and he was struggling to pass them, since we have been on cow and gate the nappys are fine however this sickness seems to have become worse, which could just of course be coincidence.

I'm going to get him weighed on Tuesday, so I may ask at the clinic and see what they say. I think if it hasnt eased off by Friday morning I will take him to the GP.

Funnily enough, I used to be a nursery nurse and one of the little boys had Carobel as you mention above, I remember his feeds being very thick but he was never sick so it obviously worked!

I'll also PM the member you mention.
    Thanks again. x

Id try the SMA staydown, its a purple lid. Its not as rich as SMA Gold. The reason I mention that is because the GP may tell you to try it before they do much so it means if it doesnt work you can say youve tried it if that makes sense? X

    Hi everyone

Just popping in for some advice, Ava seems to have been straining since yesterday. She had a poo last night which looked normal (not hard or anything) but she still seems to be straining constantly and screaming when she does it. She's had a load of wind but no poo today (which isn't unusual they normally happen later on) she just seems to be in so much pain in her tummy, she hasn't slept at all today, maybe half an hour here and there, but not a block of 3-4 hours like normal.

I just don't know what to do to help her, i feel like a terrible mother. To make matters worse my MIL is here and has just taken her off me to give her a drink of water. She did ask if she could but was already standing over me with a bib when she did so i didn't feel like i could say no. Then she said to her 'come on let's see if Nana can get rid of that pain' i know it's all in my head but i just felt like it was being implied i wasn't doing enough to try and help her. I've come upstairs under the pretence of going to the loo as i'm on the verge of tears and don't want anyone to see.

DH goes back to work tomorrow and i'm so worried i am going to let me beautiful baby girl down.

Sorry got all emotional but needed to get this out somewhere. Any advice greatly appreciated x

A gentle massage of the tummy, cycling the legs and a session incase vibrating chair always helps my lo.. Usually brings a poonami!!

That was a really bad night for me :( Elliot's been pretty good for the last couple of weeks, just waking once, but he was clusterfeeding a lot during the day yesterday and carried on through the night. Think I got about 4 hours sleep at most. I started back on contraception on Friday - Cerazette mini pill - and while it's not supposed to affect milk supply I am wondering if it's had an effect.

Bluebell, sounds like a growth spurt to me, rather than your pill, your LO is just a weekish behind mine, and my LO had a growth spurt and was feeding every 1.5hours by day and 3 by night at about the same age as yours is now...

DarkPhaery, sorry about the short reply, was in the middle of putting LO down for the night, but didnt want to wait to reply properly cos you sounded so upset! Seriously, the vibrating chair has had incredible results- discovered by accident, used on purpose now! Dont feel bad, you are doing a fab job. Mothers and MIL's always make you feel a bit useless somehow. Just remember things have changed ALOT since we were little so they dont always know best. My mum hasnt heard/doesnt know half the things i know about- cluster feeding, growth spurts etc cos Doctors just didnt tell mums this stuff then, and sleeping on the tummy, smoking and drinking and giving your baby alcohol was all acceptable then, and we know about how right (not) that was now!
