No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries in January 2012 Challenge!

Hello Ladies.
I have my first UU of 2012 - finished my 1litre bottle of ABC tea tree skinwash.
HG product for me, so went 'shopping in my stash' this morning and have filled the botttle up with another 750ml ready for later!
The fact that I could do this lead me to ask the question who in their right mind has a spare 750ml of shower gell just waiting to be used? - I feel I have serious issues!
On the plus side - another £1 into my Vegas holiday pot.Scrappie

I think it would work because lots of people are looking for ways to cut their expenditure. This is an easy way to do that for them. I don't think that you would find yourself stacked out with "Ladies who lunch" though because they have the time to search groupon and such like.
It all depends on how expensive these things are in your local area already because if it's cheap enough to get it done by someone at a salon, most people won't go for the DIY option.
Getting my hair cut tomorrow, I've not had it done since July  as I haven't had the time or money and then when I did, I was ill. Grinch groan.
DH and I have been tidying DD's bedroom today. We started last night (he opened her wardrobe and loads of stuff fell on him) but she's so vile, she just screams and shouts at me. She actually hit me yesterday. I just can't get through to her at the moment. DH is finally realising what she's been doing and how she plays everyone else off against me and tries to make me out to be an awful person. Gah. At my wits end with her to be honest.
Was so late last night that I didn't do the moisturising after the bath, I was too tired and cold afterwards as the heating had gone off by then.Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -

I'm here to report my first UU of the year!
Wilko Dry shampoo. WIBA? Only if I couldn't find my usual Batiste brunette (which is why I bought this at the time!) It smells nice but you need to use a lot more than the other brand I use.0 -

I know there are a lot of fellow nail polish junkies on here, and I know that a fair few of us like our nail art, but as we're aware that can get expensive! So for a few months I've been toying with the idea of a 'paint your own' nail salon, that would have polishes from all different ranges and would let people do their own nail art, compare similar colours etc without having to fork out for them. Think the nail equivalent of a paint your own pottery place, if that makes sense, where you pay for using the products provided and can then buy stuff on top if you like it. I've got other ideas for it as well in terms of things it could do (linking up with social networking sites, expanding into other kinds of make-up etc) but I wanted to put the feelers out to start with and see if it sounds like something that could work.
I've asked a few friends and they've said it sounds like a great idea to them, but I wanted to see what you lot thought as a) we are a bit of a beauty-obsessed thread and b) I don't 'know' you guys so I'm hoping I'll get honest answers - I don't mean that in a horrible way but there's always that thing with asking your friends of whether they're just saying they like an idea because they're your friends!
Many thanks
In many respects, a nice idea, but there are a few potential issues with this:
1) Hygeine. How will you keep the bottle of paint clean? How will you be able to tell that people who come in and use the varnish won't have nail infections etc. which could spread to the bottle and then infect other people who use it after? That's your reputation down the pan and potential laswuits right there.
2) Keeping an eye on all those little bottles and even littler nail art things...very easy to slip into a bag when someone's eyes are elsewhere...instant profit loss.
3) It's quite hard to do nice nail art, depending on what you want. Customers might be a bit disappointed at their DIY efforts, but that's not really your problem so much...
Hygeine is the biggie. Nail techs know what to look for. How can you ensure that you can keep the environment clean, and how could you prove that someone didn't pick up an infection from your paint place if they then start to slag it off? And what kind of insurance would you get? Professional nail tech insurance only insures the nail tech: there's no way they would be covered to let untrained and uninsured people loose on each other. You'd need public liabilty, of course, but would you have to get some sort of indemnity form for everyone to sign before hand? Probably. But I think you would need some more on top, although I can't think for the life of me what that would be. I would seriously recommed some investigation on top to see if it's feasable.
If that seems a bit down, it's not intended that way. I have a certificate in nails (although I've done little with it, lol), so I know some of the pitfalls to look out for, and it's best to consider these things from all angles before commiting.
Best of luck! Please call me 'Pickle'

hello ladies, i was regular poster on here but managed to get my stash down to a reasonable amount. My weakness is still makeup and i haven't made much of a dent in that stash so am going to rejoin you this year. I hardly got any smellies this christmas so am very tempted by the boots sale. i nearly picked up a lovely looking hello kitty set - but my question is what does it smell like???? I got caught out one yera with a ted baker set that when i opened it i hated the smell of it and was stuck with the set until i grud ginly used it up.
look forward to your replies
(be glad of any other advice on things in the boots sale - like fcuk, project d, gok etc....trying hard to be debt free by the end of 20100 -

I think it's a good idea, but i'm not sure how it would work. Apart from the hygiene issues Inapickle mentioned, the cost would be a concern for me. Firstly you'd have to spend an awful lot to get the range of colours/brands needed. But how are you going to get that back? You'd have set up costs, heating, lighting, rent, insurance, cleaning, advertising, staff etc costs on top so to make money you'd have to charge quite a bit per customer plus allowing for loss for spilled bottles, broken bottles, stolen bottles. Some types of nail art (water marbling for example) use a lot more polish than say sticking a few gems on so you'd have to allow for them doing that with more expensive polishes compared to someone who would paint them in a cheap polish with the odd gem per nail. Allowing for all that you're getting in to the price-range of going to get your nails done (can get them done for £10 round here) and they last quite a while so people would probably prefer to spend the bit extra to go and get them done?
I like the idea i'm just not sure how it would work:j0 -

Hi Scrappie - I have just had a count up and have to confess to having 48 :eek:shower gels/lotions/potions in my stash - some are small sizes but quite a lot of them are the 450-500ml L'Occitane ones, plus a few Philosophy 480ml ones for good measure. Now you have made me wonder who in their right mind has all that lot?! This is why I need this thread desperately....:o:o0
