Strange how they state 10,000 Free router's then it drops to 2,500 on the T&C's

Best done after they've dispatched the router probably. As I said - "may appear". Even though my house has the right address it seems to be just off the coast of Nigeria.

I also noticed that the pointer was showing me in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa

Once you've entered your address in the user Zone it sometimes relocate the pointer but its V.Easy to move & relocate to the correct position anyway.


My Free Fonera Router that was ordered last Thursday has just turned up with TNT :T

That's pretty quick shipping for free. Shame the post office can't deliver some of my stuff at all when I pay them to.

I guess the pointer defaults to map coordinates N0.0 W0.0 if it doesn't know any better, which is how we come to be in the sea.

Another way of avoiding people actually using the service is to be a "Bill" rather than a "Linus" so people have to pay. Of course that way you don't get to use other people's wireless for free either but then finding a hotspot that's useful looks like it'll be tricky anyway (unless you're paddling off the coast of Africa).

I'm a Bill on the first Router I got last year & now a Linus on the Free Fonera with a different account

There are 3 different users Alien, Linus & Bill

Alien's have to pay to use the service as they do not have their own FON Wireless Router
Bill's earn 50% commission on people using their FON router & therefore have to pay to use 'other' FON hotspots.
Linus's don't earn commission & therefore have Free access to 'other' FON hotspots.

I was looking at that aspect and noticed that you actually only get paid if the user buys their day's worth of access via your hotspot. If they buy elsewhere and happen to use your hotspot later in the day then you get nothing. If you don't mind me asking, did you ever get any "Alien" cash out of it or were you just looking to reduce traffic?

I'll go with "Linus" mode just out of curiosity. If things get too busy outside my front door (really unlikely) or I can't find any free hotspots when I'm about town then I'll turn "Bill".

I've have only had 112 passes purchased from my FON router in a town center location (with a external booster antenna for greater coverage) in the last year; 50% of €3 x 112 = €168 which is then paid into my Paypal account, coverted into GBP & 3.5% +20p (£4.05) taken off leaving about £105 for 12 months or £8.75 per month towards the cost of the internet connection.

In your case then the returns make it well worthwhile. In my case I doubt one person would buy a pass in the lifetime of the router unless they'd got drunk and walked up the wrong street! It's nice to know it can work anyway.

You maybe surprised, as we get the same user every week purchasing a pass from us, so someone near you may have a wireless laptop but no wireless router & £1.50 a day for wireless internet access ain't bad
