I stayed at IP for my first trip so im no snob. I like the casino there as well and allways visit every trip.

People that havent been to vegas have no idea what its like.
Showing someone the Orleans it would look good to most first timers. Trouble is, when they get there they realise being off strip is not what they wanted and i would imagine the O attracts a more mature crowd.
This site IS about moneysaving but if i had booked the Orleans because people here like to rave about it i would be dissapointed.

Imagine an Older persons view of Ibiza. A hotel you like out of the way would be dissapointing for someone expecting the club scene.

You've never actually set foot in the Orleans have you ? :rotfl:
People who are attracted to the Orleans on price -now let me see what compares pricewise : CircusCircus -on Strip technically but a long walk or a short bus ride (how much is the Deuce now $5 ?) Riviera -same location as CC , and Imperial Palace -mid strip location -some building noise and awfully tired rooms with the thinest matresses in town. Orleans has huge rooms with seperate seating area -and comfy beds. I've never had a noise issue at the Orleans despite always having a room near the elevator.
Location -it's actually quicker on the Orlean's free shuttle to get from the hotel to mid-strip than it is from CC or the Riv -so where is the advantage in staying "on Strip".
Food choices at the Orleans include an oyster bar, steak loft, as well as the usual food court with Subway, burger places etc
Age group is right across the board -seniors -yes but every other demographic too. It's often a heck of a lot livelier than CP, TI Mirage etc but without the college kids element (who are far too cool and image aware to even step off Strip). The Irish bars are always fun too and never sedate.
Pool is the nicest of all the budget priced hotels. Comps are generous (I've not paid for a night at the Orleans in years and I'm a moderate gambler)

It's not the Bellagio but then people who want that aren't looking in this price bracket and there are plenty of people who would rather spend their money on a nice meal, more gambling, better shopping or a longer stay than a rather small room in a hotel that happens to have Brad and George's movies associated with it. Different people have different ideas of value.

I've spent a long weekend at the Orleans before now and to my shame never made it to the Strip-there was too much going on at the Orleans -shows, very profitable gambling, meals with friends, pool time, dancing. It wasn't planned that way but I had a great trip. Admittedly there were a lot of my friends staying there that weekend and it's not usual for me to stay put in Vegas.

Never saw the laundrette though.....where did you say it was again Bazza ? ;)

something to add to the list of reasons to recommend, then? ;)

I also really want to know what's wrong with MAG...why we should not be recommending it...it's a brilliant place to enjoy a meal in Vegas if you sit on the patio, not terribly expensive (maybe that's why we shouldn't recommend it) and good food (we think).
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Orleans also has a cinema (but probably no one wants to go to a movie when in Vegas except us)...you can go buy popcorn and take it back to the casino...been there done that. And bowling...still haven't been bowling but one day maybe.

I know i'll regret getting involved in this debate... but... ;)

Baza - I kinda see where you're coming from in some respects (in that the same suggestions crop up over and over again), however we're quite a 'regular Vegas bunch' here in some respects, so that's to be expected.

What I would say though, is if you have different opinions of what people should be doing in Vegas, just say them - I doubt you'll be shot down unless you are abrupt about it :)

We've had it before where this is differing opinion on Stripburger for example, and I know I don't agree with peoples opinions on the time it takes to escape the likes of MGM / Caesars Palace etc, or the room sizes at Paris, but that's all they are - just opinions :)

I welcome your posts as its always good to have peoples viewpoints, you just can't decide or dictate what people do / dont do in Vegas :) Elantan is a good example - hated it but loved the Platinum... I'd never dream of recommending Platinum to anyone as a first hotel (although we love it to bits), and first trip I would recommend people would stay @ Luxor, and thats just cos of the uniqueness it offers.

First trip (before I discovered this thread and that other people moved hotels for example), we did Luxor for 9 nights (IIRC), and TI for 7 nights, and loved every minute of both... we didn't need to be in central strip but we have enjoyed staying all over the place, for many different reasons.

The key things in making a recomendations are:
    a) trying to understand what they like
    b) trying to understand their budget
    c) working off personal experience

even then, we'll never get it right so just throw your own suggestion forward and at least you get to say "told you so" afterwards ;):D

    20000! :o

Man, I only have around 7000 (enough for a crepe for Jean Philippe) haha
finally got to 15000 points on myVegas - what a ball ache!!! It was getting harder and harder to collect points so i've cashed out and stopped playing (theres no point playing after you've cashed out as the 'earning rate' is so much harder, the more 'VIP' you are (you wouldn't catch a casino rating that way would you!?))

So got meself a pair of Mirage Secret Dolphin Garden thingy tickets.... I know they're included as part of the resort fee @ Mirage but not planning on staying there any time soon and it'll kill a bit of time - few years since we've been too :)

Enjoy reading everyone's views especially when a relatively newcomer disagree's with a "regular" :rotfl: some people can come across as really rather rude
