Baza you are kind if missing the point.

When this thread first started it wasnt a sticky and it was started on a site called Moneysavingexpert, so it was about exactly that, moneysaving. I was asked by Trets at the time it went to a sticky for my input. I gave him all the moneysaving tips I could think of at the time.

I accept that the thread/forum has changed since its inception but to me its primary role is still about moneysaving in Vegas.

I also accept that to most newbies to Vegas should stay on the strip and if moneysaving is what they want (prob is if they have found this site) then I "plug" the cheaper hotels midstrip and if they want to avoid the excessive weekend rates on the strip I will "plug" Orleans.

I love Vegas but I dont have much money so I have to do Vegas on the cheap, but it does wind me up when others come on here laughing about it.

    PS
I have also stayed in most of the top end hotels, where I feel out of place and cant afford the table minimums, the dirinks or the food!

My first Vegas trip I stayed at Circus Circus and Imperial Palace and loved both of them...I was in Vegas whhhoooo hoooh

As you might have seen im planning on going next year, i have no idea how far 'off the strip is'? this hotel seems very nice from the pictures etc and is coming up at about $553 for two people in june next year?

I would like to be in the action of vegas ie casino's/fair rides/the motley crew strip club lol

But i have no idea or concept of the size of vegas and 'the strip'?

Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent map with distances on etc or is everything easy enough to get to with shuttle busses etc?

    Thanks

There is a map on the first page but no distances, I dont know of one that will show distances, maybe "google"

The strip is long about 4 miles from Strat to the Mandalay Bay and the hotels are huge, MGM has over 5000 rooms and it can take 15 minutes just to walk from room to strip.

    What hotel seems "very nice"

Whatever hotel you choose (with only a couple fo exceptions) you will have a casino in the hotel.

    What Fair rides?

    What Motleycrew strip club?

I agree not everyone wants to stay on strip, just look at the post by the regulars here but i thinky you will will find most people DO want to saty on strip.
You say some want to stay away from the madness, for some thats what they want. Crowds, noisy casinos flashing neon etc.
What was your first reason to go to vegas? to stay off strip and avoid the crowds?

i first visited Las Vegas in the 70's and have been in each decade since. The reason then was to gamble and dress up like royalty, and to see the amazing shows, and all those we classed as legends but could only see on the cinema screen/tv, except in Vegas. There was never a tramp, mugger or beggar to be seen. The strip & Fremont st (not including the hotels most of which are amazing) are far less classy now. The hotels have much more to offer though. Like many others on here I just love the place, but not the beggars and drunks of which there are sadly far too many these days.

I stayed at IP for my first trip so im no snob. I like the casino there as well and allways visit every trip.

People that havent been to vegas have no idea what its like.
Showing someone the Orleans it would look good to most first timers. Trouble is, when they get there they realise being off strip is not what they wanted and i would imagine the O attracts a more mature crowd.
This site IS about moneysaving but if i had booked the Orleans because people here like to rave about it i would be dissapointed.

Imagine an Older persons view of Ibiza. A hotel you like out of the way would be dissapointing for someone expecting the club scene.

    To 21yearold

If you really are only 21 years old you will have no problem in sprinting up and down the Strip, but there's plenty of buses if you need a rest. Its only when you get old like me you need to worry about the distances. There are a few rides/roller coasters in circus circus adventuredome, and stratosphere, new york new york have rides. Primm Valley hotels have roller coasters, log flume rides and arcades you can buy daily wristbands. Motley crue were last feb at Hardrock don't know if still there
  • Thanks Luci.
I didn't think we needed them last time but thought it was best to double check.
Prob won't be on here much, but I will try my best to do a TR!
Can't wait to see the Cosmo after the mixed bag of reviews on here :-)

I'll be desperate to see what you think of it as we are staying at the Cosmo for a week from 19th Sep :D

Please please do a TR when you get back!

Hope you have a great time.

Theres value for money and there is cheap bland.

I for one would never think of going to Ellis Island for their value BBQ etc when i could have better on the strip..

We've had BBQ on the strip a number of places for a heck of a lot more money and none have been a patch on EI ribs...but since it's 'value BBQ" so I guess that means it is no good?

Maybe you should try them, just to see? Or would they just not be good because the restaurant is at EI? We go to a range of restaurants each trip, from quite cheap to quite expensive...EI ribs are still one of the only 'must dos' every trip...and the meal my in-laws still talk about every time Vegas is brought up...and my FIL always says EI was his favorite casino, because it was small and different to the rest...I think he felt he could just hang out and be himself there...so...

I'd also like to know where in London you could find a Vegas-style casino? I live in London...there ain't any. :)

Also, don't most people here recommend that first timers look to stay on the Strip? I think we do...only when people start going on about things that are very hard to come by on the Strip do people normally suggest off-strip places...or as photome says when Strip prices are too high because of weekends or events, then people suggest other alternatives.

Part of what makes this thread great is there are so many people who have been so many times that they can perhaps suggest things an average first-timer may not even know exists...rather than leaving them to stay at and visit all the usual stuff that is touted in guide books, etc. And yes while the thread was set up on MSE after all, and while a lot of people will be looking for moneysaving options, that is not all that's discussed here by a long-shot. But read trip reports of people who did no research - one thing they will complain about is how everything is 'so expensive'...because if you don't know where to look, it kind of is...and not everyone wants to shell out a load of cash for everything every day.
