It just makes me laugh how some of the regulars plug the off strip hotels because they have a kitchen and laundry.

Because those are positive things for some visitors, who might be unaware of the offerings with the additional amenities a bit further afield? Because some don't necessarily feel they need to be on the Strip (some prefer being off of it). Obviously some quite like some comforts of home when on holiday. Pretty sure that anyone who has ever "plugged" them has done so because they enjoy these places, find the additional amenities enhance their experience and other like minded folks might be interested in them as well. Shame on them! ;)

Speaking of the poverty, I was womdering out loud to my OH earlier about the people begging on the walkways. Do some of them beg 'professionally' so to speak?

Yes, think that someone (stoneman, maybe Frogitt? maybe someone else completly) posted an article awhile back about it.

I still give to some...i cannot help it...I know many are either doing it for a living or will use the money for things I would prefer not to know about...but I still can't help it.

Did I post about the woman with the cat on one of the bridges by Cosmo last trip? At first I was so excited (I love cats and for obvious reasons you never see these sorts of folks with cats - dogs, yes)...but then I realised that there was something not right about a cat sitting there with sunglasses on, there for tourists to want a photo and leave a 'tip'. Then it made me really, really sad that I took a picture of the cat with the glasses....because either it was drugged or not right...and it seemed really mean and I spent the next hour at least obsessing about that poor cat. :(

Once we had dropped our bags in etc we nipped out for something to eat, we went to a place looking for ribs ( for hubby) and landed at the steak place across the road from the platinum, but they didn’t do ribs and the prices were way way way too expensive so we nipped over to Ellis Island.

Ellis Island what can I say, it reminds me of a place in Saltcoats that has puggy machines etc, the walls are all darkish wood with paintings of old ships on the walls, the food was ok nothing great infact I take that back the food wasn’t good, it wasn’t the worst I have eaten (the Mexican in Tucson wins that prize) but it really wasn’t good, but it was handy and next to the platinum and we were tired.

Thanks for the trip report, appreciate that you took time to give an alternate view.

I wasn't sure on this though if you guys went to the restaurant or the BBQ at Ellis Island - originally thought the BBQ since you were after ribs...if so surprised that you didn't enjoy it - it's one of our favorites and my in-laws still talk about it nearly 3 years on...my FIL loved EI overall, as he liked the feel of a small more locals-sort of a place. We have only had a meal in the EI restaurant once, the steak special, and we thought it was OK but nothing that exciting...many think it's the best deal in town though...and it is certainly inexpensive.

As for food in general, also surprised as the food in the US is one of the things we look most forward to...I'm American so I could blame that, but English hubby too - and many here...one of the reasons that a kitchen in our hotel room isn't really at all important to us as so many options to eat out. It's all a matter of personal taste of course, and understand that some won't agree.

Sorry that you did not enjoy Vegas...I can understand that certain parts of it would be a big downer (like the panhandlers, etc). As for those playing the slots, we probably look a bit mesmerized and not like we are having a lot of fun, but really we are - usually. :) Vegas is a man-made playground, so I can see if someone is really more interested in natural sorts of places that it would not really suit them.

  • Hey everyone, would you say $39 a night at Bally's (North tower) is a good deal?

All going very well. Quite different - not been on the strip yet, but I guess we've not been here that long lol. I'll post more in a few days, Kevin's badgering me to get back over to the Orleans. Seems he's finished his beer now, and wants to go play his free play from the tournament. :rotfl:

Lesley, there is free wifi at the Orleans if you go to the coffee place near the main entrance. Some quite comfy chairs too. You are also allowed 10 minutes a day in the business centre up the escalators next to the showroom. You have to sign in with the staff, but it's never been busy when I've been.

So far I've only ever been to Vegas with all my male friends and almost every hour of every day has involved heavy drinking. Don't get me wrong, I love that and have so much fun, but I'd also like to go with my OH at some point for a more relaxed trip.

Sorry but I've just laughed my way through your entire review. I particularly loved the part about others being miserable

Each to their own I guess...

In response to the laundry in Vegas argument I'd recommend my solution of just buying new clothes while you're there :D

That's what I do, I roll up a hold-all in my case then come home with a new wardrobe (not literally) in it :rotfl:
